New York’s Artichoke Basille Pizza: Why The Controversy?
Reviews
Food (5/5)
The food absolutely deserves five stars.
The Artichoke slice is legendary for a reason. It is rich, creamy, bold, and unlike anything you’ll find at a typical pizza spot. The portion size alone sets it apart. One slice is massive and easily more filling than two standard NYC slices.
The Margherita slice is another favorite of mine. Simple, fresh, and consistently delicious.
The Crab slice is also excellent and worth trying if you want something different and well-executed.
I don’t eat pork, so I haven’t personally tried the pepperoni or vodka pepperoni slices, but they are extremely popular and clearly loved by many regulars.
I’ve been coming here since around 2008, and there has never been a single visit where the food disappointed. I’ve recommended this place to friends and family over the years, and no one has ever regretted coming here.
Yes, the slices are more expensive than a typical $1–$2 NYC slice, but the portion size and quality fully justify the price.
Service (4/5)
Service is solid and exactly what you’d expect from a high-volume pizza spot.
You order at the counter, make specific requests like reheating or cutting, and the staff handles it efficiently. There are no table servers, so expectations should be aligned with that model. Within that context, service is reliable and professional.
️ Atmosphere (3/5)
Atmosphere is simple and functional.
There’s no traditional seating, just wall-mounted wooden counters where you can stand and enjoy your slice. This isn’t a sit-down restaurant, and it’s not trying to be. The focus is clearly on the pizza, not the ambiance.
Final Thoughts
Artichoke Basille’s Pizza has grown a lot over the years, with multiple locations now across Manhattan and beyond, and for good reason. This spot has earned its reputation.
Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or introducing someone to a true NYC pizza experience, this place delivers every single time. It’s iconic, consistent, and absolutely worth the visit.
Highly recommended.
The trademark Artichoke slice was bursting with flavor but super heavy even when sharing with others. Need to come back here on an empty stomach to attempt to try the rest. Their Margherita slice looks amazing as well.
Edit: went in again for the margherita slice and it was good but not their best. Tasted a bit burnt throughout. Stick to the freshly made unique artichoke slices here
The only reason I even tried this place was my manager’s enthusiastic recommendation, which he gave when he was clearly hammered. My sober reality? It’s the worst pizza I’ve had in NYC, and I let him know it.
The unforgivable sin here is the salt. Everything on the slice, every layer, is aggressively, overwhelmingly salty. It’s not seasoned well; it’s a sodium overload that kills every other potential flavor.
Credit where it’s due: the crust is good, and the slices are absolutely huge. The service was okay, the place was empty, and I appreciated the little outdoor standing tables for grabbing a quick bite.
But ultimately, nothing saves it from the salt. It’s a hard pass. I’m sticking to Prince St Pizza from now on.
Be warned: this slice is very heavy, so if you have a smaller appetite, it’s definitely something you could share with a friend. But if you’re feeling hungry or just want to treat yourself, it’s absolutely worth digging into solo. It’s not your average New York slice-it’s more like a full meal.
The service was quick and efficient, which is always appreciated in a busy city spot. There were a few standing tables both inside and outside, which made it easy to grab a quick bite without a long wait.
If you’re in NYC and craving something different from the usual cheese or pepperoni, the Artichoke Slice is a must-try. Creamy, cheesy, and full of flavor-this slice lives up to the hype!
