We’ve been to Armsby many times for Brunch but never for dinner. I’m not sure if we caught them on a bad night, but our experience was disappointing.
We were seated in a booth near the windows at the front of the restaurant and it was absolutely freezing. We asked to be moved but they were not able to due to how busy it was. We decided to tough it out but ended up regretting it. We had to keep our heavy winter coats on for the whole meal and every time the front door opened a chilling breeze would pass over us. If you go here during cold weather make sure they seat you in the back.
It was also a bad sign when the server checked to make sure we DIDN’T have the specials menu, presumably because they were already sold out. Unfortunately this theme continued when we were told they were out of the flatbread only after we tried to order it. Next when our cheeseboard arrived the server informed us they had to change one of the cheeses due to running out. I also added the on-menu option of jalapeños to my sandwich but when it arrived the server said they were actually out of those as well. Between no specials and 3 separate instances of missing items it was not a great ordering experience.
Our server was still good given the situation and was mostly there whenever we needed them. We ate quickly and skipped dessert due to freezing our butts off.
Drinks:
Starry Night: 5/5 very tasty and great presentation!
Cabin Fever: 3/5 nothing wrong with it, was just “fine”
Food:
Northeast Cheese Trio: 4/5, despite the substitution after we ordered everything was good!
Handmade Pasta: 4/5, only complaint was they went a little crazy with the black pepper. It was A LOT of black pepper.
Southern Style Fried Chicken Sandwich: 3/5, “fine”. The texture and flavor of the breading was awesome and crispy, but the chicken itself was under-seasoned and had no flavor. I definitely missed the jalapeños for an added kick.
Menu has many options without being overwhelming. Some of the sauces are lacking a little flavor, and I was a little disappointed by the size of the double patty burger but over all it was good food. The prices made sense and the portions were pretty close to what I’d expect. This is a great spot for date night, meeting family or friends. I wouldn’t recommend for children though.
Staff was friendly and mostly attentive. We did have to wait about 45m to 1hr for our food and the waitress took about 40 min to tell us it would be a few more minutes that ended up being about 10 more minutes.
I might consider visiting again during a less busy time.
To be fair, the front of the house absolutely rocked it—friendly, attentive, and professional. The service was the highlight of the evening. However, the back of the house fell noticeably short. On a Saturday night, the kitchen had already run out of chicken sandwiches and short ribs by 7:15 pm. That’s kitchen management 101—especially for a restaurant of this reputation.
We also ordered two boards, and the inconsistency was hard to ignore. One arrived with mini breads that weren’t toasted at all, while the other came out with mini breads that were completely burnt. That lack of quality control summed up the evening.
It went downhill from there. We ordered the pâté—only to find out that was 86’d as well. At that point, it felt like slim pickings. The salad we did receive was overwhelmed with cumin, to the point where it dominated the entire dish. I wasn’t even compelled to take photos of the food, which says a lot.
Overall, while the service was excellent, the food execution and menu availability were disappointing. We left feeling underwhelmed and surprised, given the restaurant’s reputation. Hopefully, this was an off night—but based on this experience, Armsby Abbey didn’t deliver the exciting food we were expecting.
Love this place, I have to make it here more!!
Menu rotates too with staples and seasonal offerings.
We also had the chicken and the eggplant sandwiches, which were also just OK. The fries were nice and crispy. The wings were giant and had a lot of meat on them.
Our drinks were excellent! I got the seasonal Charli’s Apples drink and it was super refreshing and tasteful, like taking a bite out of a green apple. I anticipate coming back, but only for a drink, or perhaps for brunch.
