This is the neighborhood pub you always knew existed back when, in the days when fireplaces still burned wood and music came from the piano, just like they do here. The menu offers select ales and cocktails, paired with hearty pub fare and dishes with their roots in India. A thoughtfully capacious list of French and American wines includes a number of curry-friendly selections and, of course, proper clarets. Rich, eclectic decor, spacious booths, warm lights and hand-carved woodwork — they just don’t make them like the Armitage any more.
Upscale operation with a lavish old-world-pub theme serving hearty dinners, plus weekend breakfasts.

The food was outstanding and thoughtfully prepared, with bold, well-balanced flavors throughout. The restaurant is known for its pot pies and tikka masala, and it’s easy to understand why. We enjoyed the chicken tikka masala and the NY strip steak, both of which were excellent choices. Our sides—the mashed potatoes and broccoli—were equally impressive. The broccoli, in particular, was elevated by a rich butter sauce that made it truly memorable.
Dessert was a highlight. The sticky date cake was phenomenal and a must-order, offering a decadent finish that exceeded expectations.
Special recognition goes to Alyssa, our bartender, whose knowledge of local beers was impressive, and Albany, our server, whose attentiveness and care reflected the restaurant’s commitment to hospitality. The attention to detail throughout the evening did not go unnoticed.
We were thoroughly impressed with Armitage Alehouse and look forward to returning soon.
We definitely ordered too many appetizers. Of everything we ate, the samosa was probably the one we could’ve gone without. It tasted more like an Indian puff than a samosa to us, but it was still tasty.
Managed to score a last-minute brunch reservation purely by luck. I fell in love with Au Cheval’s burgers during my last trip to Chicago, so I had to make a stop here. Both to test the burger lineage and to finally try that famous sticky date cake.
The space was split into two distinct vibes. A front section with a bar and a few booths, and a main dining room in the back. With a reservation, we snagged a nice booth in the back, and the service was super friendly throughout the afternoon.
The menu flirted between British tavern food and Indian dishes, so we kicked things off with the charred naan. We’d heard great things about it, and while it felt a bit heavy for a starter, the combo of spiced lamb and the yogurt dip was lovely.
For mains, we split the wagyu burger and a pot pie. The burger had a really solid smash patty with just the right amount of grease and crispy lace edges, though I did wish they’d toasted the buns a bit more to give it some structure.
The pot pie was satisfying, but not exactly what we imagined. They rotate fillings daily, and we opted for the Steak & Ale, which came looking impressive with a huge marrow bone jutting out. Conceptually cool, but since the pie filling was already soft, the marrow didn’t add much noticeable flavor or textural contrast. It just felt a bit redundant.
The sticky date cake, however, was flawless. Totally agree with the consensus that this is one of the best desserts in the city. Addictively deep brown butter aroma, a nutty base, and a complete sticky glaze to push it into full indulgence.
The space is something else (in a great way). It’s like walking into a time warp back to the early 20th century. Dark wood everywhere, dozens of oil paintings in elaborate frames, dimmed lighting and period fixtures, Victorian table lamps lining the dark wood bar, textured wallpaper and a giant fireplace in the center of the dining room.
The service was impeccable. We were greeted right after we were seated and gave our drink order. We ordered a Penicillin and the Mumbai Mule. Both were delicious. For appetizers we ordered the samosas and naan with whipped feta spread. Both were delicious but I could have made a meal out of the samosas alone. They were the best that I’ve ever had! For dinner we got a prime rib sandwich and wagyu double cheeseburger. My son and his partner ordered the curries. One had chicken and the other had shrimp. I wasn’t very impressed with the prime rib sandwich. The cheeseburger was also good but the real winner was the curries. I will definitely order it next time.
If you are looking for a unique and delicious experience to try then this is an excellent choice. The ambiance is mesmerizing and the service was excellent. I also would like to try some of the other food options. Be aware, in case of food allergies, that the French fries are cooked in beef tallow and it is also in the pot pies. That said, the fries are delicious.
As far as cost, be prepared for a higher price point than a typical tavern. There were four of us. We each had two cocktails, the table shared two apps and for dinner our entrees were two curries and two sandwiches. Our total before tip was $350.00
The sticky date cake for dessert will knock you over like an anime character. It’s the perfect topper to what has to be the best dinner date place in the city.
But let’s be honest… the real star of the night was dessert. The sticky date cake was borderline life-changing. I don’t want to be dramatic, but it was… orgasmic. Warm, rich, perfectly sweet — the kind of dessert that makes the table go quiet for a minute.
Amazing food, cozy vibes, and a menu that doesn’t miss. Already planning a return visit just for that cake.
