I heard about Aqui es Texcoco listening to a podcast with Jonathan Gold, where he raved about the restorative effects of the restaurant’s lamb barbacoa. So I made the drive out from Whittier to this new-ish branch of the small restaurant chain for a comforting lunch on a gloomy, rainy SoCal Friday. This restaurant is large with plenty of seats, suitable for large groups and parties. Since I was only picking up to-go, I immediately dove into the menu looking for something to bring home and share with my wife. I ordered two items: the barbacoa enchilada in mole sauce and one quesataco with huitlacoche. Both were delicious and survived the ride home, though I imaging the quesataco would be better if eaten at the restaurant before it loses its crunch. The enchiladas were delicious in the mole, and I can’t imagine having the enchiladas in any other way. If I had to order again, however, I probably would want to sit down in the restaurant and have the family size barbacoa or the quail, which look great in photos!

stumbled upon Aki Estexokoko thanks to the MAPSTR app and had no idea it was once one of Jonathan Gold’s Anytime Favorites, but I knew right away I made the right choice for lunch. It was quiet for a Sunday around 12:30, and everyone there was warm, smiling, and helpful. As a French speaker, practicing Spanish was smooth and fun. I ordered the special combo with a fresh salad topped with queso fresco, made-to-order guacamole without onions, and their own house-made tostadas and tortillas. The barbacoa, made from lamb, was perfectly tender and comforting, especially wrapped in their soft tortillas. I also had two tacos de barbacoa and one de cabecita, all incredible. Their sopa de tortilla, made with lamb broth, was rich and full of flavor. They serve Mexican Coke and a delicious jamaica, which made it all even better. This is the kind of place you want to share with someone, even if it’s a bit of a drive from downtown. It feels like home, grandma-style, and they really go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. I’ll definitely be back soon.

I order my food ,to go. By the way the app that I used , was very easy to order from. There was absolutely nobody at the restaurant. I saw one employee, who handed me my food.. I walked back to my car and enjoyed my food for the very first time. I’ve never ate here before. I had three lamb tacos, rib meat. Presentation was on point. Plenty of onions, lemon, hot sauce, mild sauce, and napkins. So I took a bite and hit bone. Now they warn ⚠️ you there may be some small pieces of bones in the meat. So, no worries, I ate the small bone , that wasn’t hard at all. Then I checked rest of the meat. There was about seven small bones in all. But the food was amazing. Cooked well ,great taste, and I will try something else from there soon.

Foods alright…
Service, cleanliness, price is all good but their food was lacking flavor. I had the crickets, rabbit and goat aka Mediterranean pita bread deal and they all were missing even a hint of salt taste.

I just dissagree with some food that i order, this is not real barbacoa, not a texcoco style, im from there and this way to cook is very different even in different places from the estado de mexico, and hidalgo, but its ok the tostada de pata also cook in different way and pancita, but besides that i give 8 out 10 to the barbacoa, consome 10, aguas frescas 10 service i gave 10 but they deserve 20. I dont dissagree with food because probably they cook like that in certains towns of estado de mexico, i went for barbacoa and i left happy, my daughters asked for chilaquiles and the porcion was big extra point, the service very profesional marcelino deserves my respects. But thanks for everything i will come back again for barbacoa and i going to bring my friends.

Came on a Sunday to try the infamous barbacoa. Super amicable staff and very attentive. Fast service. No wait time with plenty of seating available. Ambiance was nice with classic/modern Mexican music and establishment is clean. Plenty of parking in the lot.
Barbacoa was great, as was the ‘consume’ soup. The pita barbacoa was good with homemade sauce. Great menu selection but limited outside of the barbacoa.

I sure recommend this place, if you want to taste real Mexican food. This place is fire. The menu pretty extensive by the way. offers lamb and is very tasteful. I could say I feel like I travel in one hour to Texcoco Mexico, and enjoy my self with this delicious plate of barbacoa. I will definitely come back. I ordered the plate and it comes with tortillas, consomé(soup that came out of the lamb while cooking) delicious.

I would have taken pictures of the food but we ate it so fast because of how delicious it was. This place is the spot if you want barbacoa. The lamb is so tender and perfect. They give you all the fixings. Prices are reasonable. Service is great as well.

Was driving by this place and stopped for lunch. Very authentic Mexican lamb barbecue. Everything was packed full of flavor. The 1/2 lb lamb rib meat was pull apart tender. Pack that into the warm corn tortillas with onions, cilantro and salsa. What more do you want? Cafe de olla was probably the best I’ve ever had. Highly recommend this place. We will be back.

Food was delicious. The two salsas that you can add to your food were wonderful, a perfect compliment (dark red had the smokey flavor and the green brought the heat). The lamb melted in your mouth. Will be back, plenty to try. If I had to describe it in one word, Comfort.
