I recently ordered a birthday cake for my wife’s 70th birthday party. It was so nice I wanted to document a 5 Star review. Our guests raved about the presentation, the lemon taste and the light texture. In by 21 years in Wilmington, I’ve never been disappointed in buying my baked goods from Apple Annie’s Bake Shop.

I absolutely love this bakery. Everyone was super nice polite and I didn’t feel rushed at all. So many busy places don’t have time to let you decide but I didn’t feel rushed and then I got the strawberry shortcake home and it was AMAZING!!! Light cake fluffy icing and fresh strawberries. It would have been a bargain at twice the cost. We also picked up a fruit flan and it was so smooth and creamy.

It’s definitely worth it to visit this locally owned and operated bakery and avoid the big box stores and their processed desserts. I highly recommend Apple Annie’s Bakery.

Best cakes and desserts in Wilmington!

Apple Annie’s is hands down one of the best bakeries in Wilmington, NC, especially if you love cakes and desserts. Their cakes are always fresh, beautifully decorated, and incredibly flavorful, and the desserts are consistently amazing without being overly sweet.

Everything tastes homemade with high-quality ingredients, and you can tell they take real pride in their baking. Whether you’re picking up a custom cake, dessert for a special occasion, or just a sweet treat, Apple Annie’s never disappoints.

If you’re searching for a top bakery in Wilmington North Carolina known for exceptional cakes and desserts, this is the place. Highly recommend!

I’ve been going to this bakery for years now, I live in Jacksonville and go at least once a week there. I was very disappointed in the Linzer Tart I purchased. I thought at first it was the glare in the glass cabinet. I asked the young man that was there and he said that it was alright and that’s the way they make them. I said really well ok, so instead of buying a few I just bought one. Once I got home I took it out and was unsatisfied with what I got. I also bought butter cookies with M&M’s for my grandkids as usual. A while back my daughter also found a hair in one of her pastries. I called to speak to a manager but all the girl said was that she could take a message with my name and concern. She went on to say that she was sorry she also noticed that the Linzer Tarts lacked size and filling. She asked me if I still wanted to speak to a manager and I said well if she’s not going to do anything then no.

We used Apple Annie’s for the first time last weekend for my daughter’s baptism cake. I didn’t know what to expect since I had just seen the decorator go viral on my Instagram reels. I was blown away by the detail- I had asked for a general design but gave creative freedom and oh my goodness it was such a beautiful cake- and it tasted amazing as well! It was three layers with strawberry in between; it wasn’t sickly sweet as a lot of cakes can be. I found my new favorite bakery!

My cake could not be more perfect! It not only looked beautiful, but tasted AMAZING! I got a chocolate cake with raspberry cream filling and chocolate cream on the outside. I highly recommend and will be ordering again soon!

We liked everything we tried! Definitely will be back to try more 🙂

Update: came back and tried the turtle brownie and cheesecake. It was just alright. I took a bite of the cheesecake before the picture. The cheesecake wasn’t light and creamy like I was hoping for. It was a typical kind of dense cheesecake. I would stick to having what I ordered the first time.

Disappointed and Let Down by Apple Annie’s Bake Shop

I really wanted to give Apple Annie’s another chance after a disappointing birthday cake I received earlier this year, but unfortunately, they let me down again—this time on my nephew’s 10th birthday.

I ordered a custom Michael Myers-themed cake for his Halloween birthday. I called to place the order and was quoted $40 for the decoration and $37 for the cake itself, totaling $80.54 after tax. I was happy to pay for a custom cake, especially since I wanted it to look great and taste better than the dry cake I had previously received from their display case.

I made it very clear during the order that the cake should not contain any chocolate, as my nephew doesn’t like it. I requested a white cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and agreed to a vanilla pudding filling when it was offered. What I received was not what I ordered: the filling was vanilla buttercream, not pudding, and there was chocolate icing on the bottom of the cake. When I called to complain, I was told they don’t even offer vanilla pudding as a filling—so why was it offered to me in the first place?

The decoration was also a huge letdown. The cake was hand-frosted with what was supposed to be a Michael Myers design, but the result was unrecognizable. Even my nephew said, “That doesn’t look like Michael Myers—it looks like some other Michael.” Sadly, I didn’t have time to request a redo, as I picked up the cake at 3 PM the day of the party. I accepted it as-is, but I was not happy.

The only positive was that the cake wasn’t dry this time. But that’s not enough to make up for the poor communication, incorrect ingredients, and subpar decoration—especially for the price I paid. I was told a manager would call me to resolve the issue, but I’ve yet to hear from anyone. It feels like they either don’t care or are too busy to follow up.

I feel like my nephew’s birthday was ruined. I put so much effort into making it special for him, and the cake was supposed to be the centerpiece. Instead, it became a disappointment. That’s a memory I can’t redo.

With my daughter’s birthday coming up in January, I’ll be looking elsewhere. Apple Annie’s has gone downhill, and I won’t be giving them another chance.
