Good food, hookah, drinks and vibes!
I visited Apex Bar and Grill in Wilmington, Delaware, this past Saturday night, staying into the early hours of Sunday morning. My experience left much to be desired, and I feel it’s important to share some of the issues I encountered.
**Cover Charge and Entrance:**
The evening started with a $25 cover charge, which had to be paid via Cash App. While paying through an app isn’t necessarily a problem, it felt unusual for a bar and grill setting. Upon entering, I was immediately hit with extremely loud music. It was clear that the sound system was not properly regulated, making the volume almost unbearable and distorting the music. This lack of sound management set a chaotic tone for the evening.
**Service and Bar Experience:**
The bar had only one bartender on duty, which seemed inadequate for the crowd size. Despite being seated directly at the bar, it took an astonishing 25 minutes to get the bartender’s attention. This wasn’t due to a lack of trying—she was more focused on dancing with her friends and customers behind the bar. To make matters worse, I noticed she was also drinking with them, which struck me as highly unprofessional.
When I finally managed to order, I asked for a tequila and tonic. What I received instead was a vodka mixed with what tasted like flat ginger ale or flat Sprite. The price for this drink was $40, which is exorbitantly high, especially considering the poor service and incorrect order. As someone who frequents other establishments in Philadelphia, like Blue Martini, this pricing felt out of line with the quality of the drink and service provided.
**Music and Atmosphere:**
The music selection throughout the night was scattered and disjointed. The DJ seemed to be randomly switching from one genre to another without any logical transition, creating an awkward atmosphere on the dance floor. It didn’t seem like the DJ was curating a playlist; rather, it felt like a random shuffle that disrupted any sense of rhythm or flow.
**Smoking Indoors:**
Another major issue was the presence of people smoking weed inside the bar. Normally, I’m not one to comment much on people’s choices regarding weed, and in most situations, I’m perfectly fine with it. However, in a small, enclosed space like Apex Bar and Grill, the smell was overwhelming and hovered heavily in the air. This created an unpleasant environment, much different from what you might expect in a larger space or open area.
**Payment and Management:**
Another oddity was the bar’s payment system. Although there was a POS system at the bar, my drink had to be paid for through Apple Cash. This inconsistency in payment methods was confusing and inconvenient.
*Final Thoughts:
I’ve visited Apex Bar and Grill a few times before, but this recent experience has convinced me not to return. From the unprofessional behavior of the staff to the subpar service, chaotic atmosphere, and overpowering smell of smoke, it was far from an enjoyable night out. I would not recommend this establishment to others, and I won’t hesitate to share my experience with friends and acquaintances. If you’re looking for a place with reliable service, reasonable prices, and a well-managed atmosphere, I suggest looking elsewhere.
The Old Fashioned was good. A tiny bit sweeter than I prefer, but not a negative on it.
The Buffalo Shrimp we’re about two inches long, breaded and sauced, with what looked more like gorgonzola cheese bits than bleu cheese bits: pretty good. Not too hot. A little messy. I liked it, but I get sticker shock over $15 for six shrimp. It’s probably the right price, but I am not used to it.
Two sliders. About three inches across. Fresh stuff. Fresh bread. Fresh beef. Fresh lettuce and onion. I don’t remember seeing any tomato on them. Good cheese. Some sort of sauce underneath. I still added ketchup to one. The sliders were very good, but I still want to change them. Maybe, I will ask for the next order.
The sliders come with french fries, which I would rather not have. The fries appeared to be the “lightly breaded” kind, which I don’t really like. They were cooked perfectly. They were crispy on the edges and creamy inside, so that was done very well. Just not my favorite.
The space is laid out well, with an open floor in the middle that is probably intended for dancing. The place is clean. The furniture is good: booths along two walls, half a dozen high top tables with two steel chairs, each. Half a dozen chairs at the bar.
The bar is broad, with a lot of shelf space. Maybe thirty bottles, in space big enough for over a hundred.
Sound system is for a dance club. Very loud. It’s not going to hurt your ears, but quiet conversations aren’t going to happen here.
Overall, I like it. I would recommend it. But it’s not the right fit for me.
