I absolutely loved my experience at Anjappar in San Diego. The food was incredibly authentic, true to Southern Indian cooking, with beautifully developed and well-balanced flavor profiles. You can really tell this is a place that takes pride in both tradition and taste.

The experience felt genuinely Indian in the best way…warm, welcoming service, the option to eat with your hands, and even a hand-washing station, which added to the authenticity. The owner was especially sweet and made us feel right at home.

I’m from the Boston area, and this was a standout meal for me. I would absolutely come back again the next time I’m in San Diego.

Very mixed reviews of this place overall to be honest.
The forest service was really quick and they delivered the food piping hot much faster than we expected.

Food was also quiet, flavorful and the good amount of spicy as well.

Some items were fairly oily but I guess that’s just how these things are made so there’s no going around it.

Really like the variety of dishes they had and we got to try a lot of new South Indian options that we had never heard of before.

Taking off major points here because of the dessert. We ordered the falooda ( actually wanted some specialty item they had but they said they were sold out of that). When we asked for the Falooda they said they had it and it actually took over 30 minutes to bring it out!! We kept asking for it and they said they were preparing it and what not, but we believe that this item was actually frozen and they were now waiting for it to defrost.
The only reason I see this is because when they did bring it to the table, IT was actually semi-frozen and definitely not worth the weight of almost 30 minutes.

As for the vibe of the place, it was like your typical Indian restaurant. Not super aesthetic or anything
We were in the back room and it felt a little enclosed but I guess there was no way to avoid that. Clearly a popular place though because by the time we left it was very packed in the front side.

Had a family lunch at Anjappar and walked away genuinely satisfied. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt extremely welcoming, and Dinesh along with his team were attentive and warm throughout the meal. The food was comforting and full of flavor, with generous portions that made it ideal for a relaxed family outing. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared and served at a steady, unhurried pace. A pleasant surprise was the sumptuous desserts offered on the house, which added a thoughtful finishing touch.

Thank you for a great meal and service that everyone in the family truly enjoyed. Hoping they maintain this standard, as we’d happily choose to dine in more often rather than just rely on takeout.

I was visiting California for a holiday trip and after a tired San Diego zoo trip the tummy craved for some nice biryani. Initially planned for charminar but after visiting Atlanta and Dallas Anjappar picked to visit ones in San Diego. Ordered mushroom 65, Gobi 65, Appam and egg curry, dosa and the twisted paneer 65 biryani. Every dish was tasty and filled the appetite. We waited for paneer biryani which took 40mins and came warm. When tasted I was like do we called this biryani?? No may be something else. Spoke to the owner and he told me that it took 45 minutes to warm the biryani in microwave oven and serve it pale… The chef literally added paneer 65 on the morning made biryani and served!!! The amazing part is the owner explaining about all this process. I may definitely recommend all dishes but not any vegetarian biryani’s.. sorry but thank you…

I ordered dinner from this place through Uber Eats. I’ve enjoyed Anjappar in the San Francisco Bay Area before, so I wasn’t sure if this location was related, but I decided to try it based on that past good experience. I ordered appam with Chettinad chicken, and the food arrived hot and freshly prepared. The appam turned a bit soggy during delivery, but that’s expected with this dish — it’s really something that’s best eaten fresh at the restaurant.

The Chettinad chicken was exactly what I hoped for: spicy, flavorful, and authentically prepared. However, the portion was smaller than I expected — only two pieces of chicken were included, which felt a bit light for a dinner entrée, especially since I didn’t order any sides or appetizers.

Overall, the flavors were solid and true to the cuisine, but I think the experience (especially the appam) would be much better dining in rather than ordering for delivery. I’d likely try the restaurant in person next time for the full experience.

We had the goat dindigul biryani and it was one of the best I’ve had in California. The manager was very friendly too. We also took the chicken thali and it was delicious. The jigarthanda was amazing.

This was my first time visiting, and I was seated right away, which I appreciated. However, the hostess seemed distracted — at first, I thought she was speaking to herself, but I later realized she had been on the phone with earphones in during the entire interaction. That made the initial experience feel a bit impersonal.

As for the food, the sauce was a bit on the salty side, and the cheese naan didn’t have as much cheese as I was expecting. The flavors were decent overall, but there’s definitely room for improvement in both the service and the dishes. I’d rate my experience around 3 stars — not bad, but with a few small adjustments, it could easily be a 5-star visit.

We drove two hours just to try the Goat Biryani and it was absolutely worth it! The aroma, flavor, and tenderness of the meat were out of the world. If you’re thinking twice about the drive – don’t. One bite, and you’ll know it was the right decision.
The ambience and the authenticity of the food only added to the experience.
We’ll definitely be coming back again and again.

We’ve been to Anjappar locations in Artesia and Tustin, but the San Diego branch truly stands out as the best.
From the flavor to the freshness, everything exceeded our expectations.

Authentic South Indian food in San Diego, Anjappar Chettinad is an absolute gem. The food is simply amazing and brings back the exact Chettinad flavors from back home. Every dish is rich, perfectly spiced, and packed with traditional taste that’s hard to find outside India.

From the aromatic curries to the flavorful biryanis and perfectly cooked starters, everything feels authentic and freshly prepared. The spice levels are just right, and you can really taste the depth of Chettinad masala in every bite.

If you’re craving real Indian food—especially authentic Chettinad cuisine—this is a must-recommended restaurant in San Diego. Definitely one of the best spots for Indian food in the area!
