Anjappar Chettinad Restaurant Over 50 years ago Anjappar began as a local Chettinad restaurant in the Chennai area, currently they operate in 70 locations in both Indian and several countries around the world. Anjappar offers a well-rounded South Indian menu with special focus on the Chettinad style preparations. The cuisine is uncommonly subtle and aromatic, a heritage of Chettiar participation in the centuries-old spice trade, the global import and export of pungent seeds, fruits and barks from places like Cochin and Penang, the Banda Islands, Arab ports in the Straits of Hormuz. The cuisine is based on staples of south Indian cooking like coconut, rice and legumes.

Love their traditional spicy food with delicious taste. It not for those who are not brave by any means. 🙂
Food arrives pretty quickly. If you order your appetizers along with your main dish, let the server know and they will bring the food staggered accordingly.
Their vegetarian dishes compete with their excellent non-vegetarian dishes for taste !
I only wish they rotate and bring some seasonal dishes.
Will be there again for more.
For entrees we had paneer tikka masala with roti, raava dosa, appam chicken masala n fried rice. All what were ordered were good.
Raava dosa n appam chicken masala were standouts.!
I wish that they had folded the chocolate dosa instead of it falling out of the tray and touching the table. 🙁
The chocolate dosa was soggy because of the chocolate syrup and my kiddo didn’t eat it.
I am going to order the crispy dosa with a side of the syrup next time onwards.
The ras malai was not good. It probably came out of a box. It was frozen.
The restaurant was rather cold (temperature) and smelled a bit too strong of artificial fragrance.
On our recent visit, I ordered the paneer biryani a dish we have had multiple times before. What came to the table was not biryani in any state or form. It was vegetable pulao with paneer placed on top. There was no layering, no integration of flavors. The paneer had no salt at all. It was bland and genuinely inedible.
I politely informed the waitress. Instead of acknowledging the issue, she insisted that this is how their biryani is prepared. I dont like to complain lightly and I hate wasting food, but I simply could not eat it. I ordered a thali instead, which was good as usual which is what was anjappar’s standard until now.
When we asked if the untouched biryani could be removed from the bill, we were told that once ordered, it must be paid for. The manager initially didn’t have the courtesy to come out and speak with us. When he finally did, it wasn’t to understand it was to tell that we’re wrong. Hr claimed this is their standard recipe, said he personally tasted it and it was fine and explained that they “don’t usually add salt” to the paneer but just flash fry it.
Earlier, the waitress had mentioned they’ve received multiple complaints about this biryani. If a dish is receiving repeated complaints, the responsible thing to do is fix it or remove it. Instead, customers are dismissed and staff are reprimanded.
This wasn’t just about the inedible biryani or the money but it was the refusal to listen, the unwillingness to take accountability and the lack of basic hospitality that truly disappointed us.
After years of loyalty, this restaurant has lost us and the friends who were with us that evening. We won’t be coming back. Ever again.
After we were forced to pay for the food that was untouched and we were leaving, we heard the manager raising his voice at the waitress for telling us about the complaints they have been receiving. That was just unfair and ridiculous.
Visited on a Monday and left completely upset.
• Chicken curry was clearly not fresh—lacked flavor and texture.
• Filter coffee was cold. The person preparing it seemed unaware of basic decoction-milk balance. It felt like the milk wasn’t even boiled.
• When I politely tried to explain, he refused to listen or acknowledge the issue.
This isn’t just about taste—it’s about respect for customers and the basics of South Indian food culture. I expected warmth and authenticity, but left with regret.
I also had this veg appetizer called ‘kuli paniyaram’ which were pan-fried dumplings made of lentils and rice. I’ve never seen that in an Indian restaurant before, but I enjoyed eating it for the first time.
What stood out most was the customer service. When we raised a concern about the biryani, the manager was not receptive to feedback and seemed unwilling to acknowledge the issue. The overall attitude felt dismissive rather than customer-focused.
