Like many native Houstonians, I have a long history with Andy’s Home Cafe, and the recipes of the Morales family. Originally founded around 1977 and named after their youngest son at the time, Andy, the restaurant was taken over by the siblings in the 90s. And most recently they were allegedly forced out of their famous location on 11th St. That location was to be a French bakery that bowed out and the location is still empty and sometimes I joke that Andy’s should move back in after negotiating a really good lease with the leasing company. But at any rate, they are now located on North Main in a lovely new venue. Back in my punk rock days, Andy’s was the place we would go to hang out in the early hours after clubbing at the island downtown. The jukebox was always wonderful. The food? It was good, classic , historically significant, and we did have concerns about the cleanliness and hygiene front of the room and even back of the room.
But their new place on North Main is lovely. It has beautiful paintings on the wall. And there are great T-shirts for purchase.
And so today I came in for the number six David’s combo and Carnegie Saleh (that’s what spell check does when I say carne guisada) to take home. They preface their Carnegie Saleh with the word “famous” and that catches my attention immediately and I know that I will have to try it. We shall see how it stacks up to Sarah’s Mexican restaurant in San Antonio’s Carnegie Sada or the ones that I’m comfortable making on my own.
Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Bill Withers playing on the sound system. Great salsas, the red one full of tomatoes and served hot. Classic Tex-Mex combo. Red tortilla for the enchilada. Great arroz y frijoles (big portions of them).
As the taco and chalupa fell apart I just combo’ed the combo onto my plate. Empty plates, see photo.
(I wish they would continue the dying Houston tradition of puffy and crispy tacos. That would be icing on the cake.)
I am so damn happy here today. Everything is great. I used to be one of those people who shunned Andy’s for hygiene issues. NO MORE. I’m leaving with a big smile on my face.

This was the closest I’ve felt to San Antonio food. My wife loves carne guisada and this is the only place that comes close to theirs (SA). Highly recommend to try this place. Will definitely be coming back regularly.

Amazing and flavorful food! From the moment you walk in the door you get that home feeling! The food and staff are above standard! The owners treat everyone like family, and that’s amazing!

An old favorite at it’s new location. Everything was great. Food is excellent. The cheese enchiladas are the best in the city. I hope the new location is just as successful as the old one used to be, so get out and check out Andy’s. I have lots of memories from the old location, we had a lot of family dinners there. My mom liked Andy’s and she always complained, lol. She passed away in 2023 , Andy’s will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks for all the memories Andy’s, I will make some new ones at your new location.

Andy’s Home Cafe is a really nice place for Tex-Mex food with a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The dishes taste fresh and homemade, and the portions are satisfying for the price. Staff were friendly and made us feel comfortable during the visit.

Fantastic Tex-Mex.
Practically a Heights staple, in my opinion.
Andy’s is quite good for many reasons, but mainly it’s consistency.
I’m fairly basic, and it’s also a little guilty pleasure of mine, but I always get the cheese enchiladas with no onions. Sometimes I order the ground beef. Since that’s the main thing I order, let’s talk about that consistency perhaps?
So peep this, I’ve been going here for over 12 years at this point, having placed numerous orders dating way back when they were originally on 11th street.
And Andy’s just doesn’t miss.
Like, it is always the same, which is to say; satisfying, delicious, and very comforting.
Service has always been fantastic as well. Although I mainly order pickup, every time I have dined has been great.

Delicious food. Will be back. Better than in the heights location! Their flavor has been honed and serving sizes upped. Pancakes are huge instead of the silver dollars of old. Only draw back is limited seating with room for 20-30 comfortably. Highly recommend for breakfast.

This is just how I remember. My parents went here as kids at the original location and now I come here even though I live an hour away. If your coming after the ball game or playing some games at cider cade, stop by here and grab an enchilada plate or the Carne guisada burritos with cheese, or a big bowl of caldo de res or menudo. This is what my parents got years ago and it’s my go to now. You will not be disappointed. It’s smaller than the original but that’s ok because the food is still good as it was before. If you know how it was before you know what to expect. This is like coming back and visiting family. I’ll definitely be back.
