Social Profile:

We opened in May 2011 in the historic Chamberlain Building which has housed auto dealerships going back to the early 1900s. We have a large photo mural when you walk in the door. The photo is from 1937 and shows pictures of the car showroom floor. This is where our main dining and cocktail lounge is today with much of the original facade. The street we are on is Locust Street which was referred to as auto row. This street used to house all of the car dealerships in town. We have a two-level dining room with views of the Pappajohn Sculpture Garden located in downtown Des Moines. We are all about good food without the attitude. We have a great modern dining atmosphere, great views but bring a midwest nice vibe.

Casual place with modern decor serving steaks & chops, plus Asian-inspired sharing plates.

I came to Americana with a party of 13 to celebrate my graduation. We were promptly seated with no wait at all, but once our server came to the table she seemed less than pleased. I’ve been an industry worker before so I know how stressful it can be to take a larger party, but at least smile and pretend to be happy. We notified our server we were missing a chair and silverware set, and she said she would grab those for us. She seemed to forget because one member of our party had to sit on the lap of another for 10 minutes before she just got up and grabbed her own. Our drinks came out fast and we thoroughly enjoyed the wine we selected. One member of our party had to ask two different servers on three different occasions for another beer. When it came to ordering appetizers we asked the server if they were big and how many would be enough for 13. She was unable to elaborate and just said “they’re not very big” so that was not helpful. The same ordeal played out when we ordered dessert (which was not that good). When our food did come it was delicious and everyone did enjoy their meals. All steaks were cooked to the requested temp, and the sides were delicious as well! Unfortunately I have to add that the server seemed very annoyed with the fact that my grandparents could not speak English even though a member of my party was directly translating and ordering for them with no problem. I’m unsure why this seemed to bother the server, but it was evident to us. I understand why automatic gratuity was applied to our large party, but I honestly wish it wasn’t because that was service was not deserving of 20%. I have had several positive experiences at Americana, and I can’t deny the food is delicious!!

Absolutely excellent food, presentation, & atmosphere. Our GF person RAVED about the mac & cheese with added chicken. My lettuce wraps were excellent! And our other diner had the chicken strips & mashed potatoes & green beans. Will return.

Was the only place we found open night of July 4th. We’re traveling and had a great experience here. Good food, great drinks and service- even though the bartender was the only server! (The manager was also bringing out food/drinks) The crab Rangoon dip was awesome. Shoutout to the awesome bartender turned temporary server! But do be warned they charge both a credit card service fee (3%) and a $3.00 plate share charge (even if you’re ordering drinks + appetizer).

I recently celebrated my birthday at Americana, and it was a wonderful experience. Since my birthday falls close to Christmas, the festive holiday decorations added a lovely touch to the atmosphere, creating a warm and cheerful vibe.

The service was exceptional and our server was quick, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed.

The food was great, with every dish perfectly prepared and full of flavor. The drinks were also spot-on, complementing the meal perfectly.

Overall, it was a memorable dining experience, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for great food, drinks, and service in a welcoming setting.

Absolutely top notch food and service, the atmosphere is great but the culture, wait staff and management are where they shine.

My sister who has celiac and I went there two nights in a row because the food was amazing and they take gluten free/celiac very seriously.

Macy and D’Angelo are easily the best wait staff I’ve had at a table in years, and they handled GF procedures in the best way possible. Jen, I believe the manager, was amazing as well! And I haven’t even had their brunch yet, no doubt I’m coming back.

Breakfast buffet for brunch. Our server Jen was great. The grill cheese bar was not available, so was disappointed as I was looking forward. Everything I tried was hot and delicious. They offer all you can drink mimosa bar, and bloody Mary bar, was very popular. Fun fact the location was a Chrysler dealership in the old day’s.

Sadly this place is closing with no explanation as to why especially since they still have a couple years left on their lease. We’ve always met a lot of family there yearly during the art festival to walk off the buzz from the bottomless mimosas while viewing art from all over which has always been a fun tradition. This year it was apparent that they don’t have enough service workers and even cups/utensils. We decided to go one last time yesterday before they close and it was obnoxiously loud! Our reservation was at 2 and by 2:30 they were telling us last call and trying to wrap things up which is a little frustrating. We should have been given a heads up about that before we started or when they were seating us. One of our waitresses was having a good ole time drinking at a table with some of her friends every 5 to 10 minutes which I was shocked was even allowed. I’d be curious to know where all the art/photography will be going once this place closes. I hope they give the public an opportunity to purchase some pieces and make an announcement. I hope a local business owner swoops in to re-establish another great restaurant in the months to come. It’s a great location with a nice atmosphere – maybe they could do some sound proofing to make the noise a little more tolerable though.

An excellent choice for gluten free and dairy free options! I love their unique twists on American classics/comfort food! Waitstaff has all been very knowledgeable and accommodating of my multiple food sensitivities, I have celiac and a dairy allergy and I have never gotten sick here. Brunch also has lots of clearly labeled items which are gluten and dairy free. One of our favorite places to eat in Des Moines!
