If you are going to Detroit and you do not go to a coney island restaurant, I’m not sure what you are doing. And if you are going to a coney island restaurant, you pretty much have to reckon with the two that sit right next door to each other on West Lafayette Boulevard, American and Lafayette, both claiming to be the original, both with fiercely loyal regulars, both worth your time. I’ll tell you which side I landed on.
American Coney Island is the one with the slightly bigger dining room, a little more light, a little more family-friendly energy. It’s been in the Keros family since 1917 and that kind of continuity is something you can feel in a place. Nothing about it is trying to impress you. There’s counter seating, there are tables, the menu is simple, and the whole operation moves fast.
The coney itself is the point. A natural-casing beef frankfurter in a soft steamed bun, topped with their signature beanless chili, yellow mustard, and diced white onion. It snaps when you bite into it. The chili is on the spicier side compared to the neighbor next door, which is really the main difference between the two places. If you want a bolder, more assertive chili flavor, American is your place. Order two minimum because one is just not going to cover it.
The loose burger is the other thing to know about. Same coney toppings but instead of a hot dog you’ve got crumbled ground beef piled on a bun. It sounds like a sloppy joe cousin and it kind of is, but done in this specifically Detroit way that is entirely its own thing. Fries are good, crispy and properly salted. The onion rings have their fans.

For a Coney Island it is, of course the best Coney Island but of course the food is mainly hotdog dogs,chili, and delicious fries. The staff though, absolutely wonderful took great care of my seniors. They made an impossible parking situation a breeze for my senior bus. I really appreciate them so thank you!!

Another must-see place in Detroit. The service was fast… Just minutes. The hot dogs were fresh and hot. Our server Red was great and very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was clean and well maintained.

A $10 Greek salad and the boxes only half full. I told them that I’ve haven’t been back here like 20 years. They used to fill the whole box full of salad. The lettuce doesn’t cost that much money, if I’m paying $10 for a salad, two Kalamata’s two little cucumbers, and two little pieces of tomato that’s it. That little box should be completely full. barely any on the chili on the hot dogs and the bill came to $21. And I had to leave him a tip, which I had paid in cash. I normally go to Lafayette Coney Island next-door. I thought I’d just give the place a chance since it looked a little cleaner, but the fruit taste awful go to Lafayette they don’t skimp on the chili or flavor. My chili had no flavor to it at American Coney Island.

We are at both this place and the next door one called Lafayette Coney Island to compare the two. Do a little Google search about it. This one wasn’t quite as good but a very close call. The atmosphere was not as iconic, but it was easy to have a conversation… Not so loud. And it was super cute inside with good AC. We parked in the parking garage across the street which you paid for. Service was excellent. It’s such a close call on who has the best coney so try them both.

I’m a fan of a good chili dog. I try to stubble across one about one a week. But if I lived this close tk a dog this good, I’d be big as a house. The dog had a little snap to it on the bite. The chilli was tasty and the cheese was real cheddar. Fries came out hot and fresh. Love the service, but it was a little awkward when you walk in. Is it counter service? No it’s table service but it’s not clear if you don’t frequent this joint. Still the best dog I had while in Detroit… Would definitely return.
