We started with the Hamachi Collars, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked within, fantastic opener. The Elk Tartare was another standout with its rich balance and refined texture. But the true surprise was the Sweet Prawn Bisque, which struck a superb harmony of flavor, fat, and mouthfeel, hands down a solid choice.
The Poached Pear, gently done in white wine, had a lovely texture and made for a delicate interlude. We paired our meal with Louis Jadot Pouilly-Fuissé, a crisp Burgundy white that complemented the seafood and game beautifully.
As for entrees, the King Salmon and Alaskan Halibut fell a bit flat, the halibut was slightly overcooked with a soggy crust, and the salmon lacked the punch we were hoping for. The Panna Cotta was solid but nothing particularly memorable.
That said, the attentive and welcoming service, along with the standout appetizers and wine pairing, more than made up for the mixed entrees. I’d happily return to explore more of the menu, Altura clearly has the talent and creativity to impress.
I ordered the caviar served over house-made chips with a white sour cream sauce and finely chopped scallions. Unfortunately, the cream sauce was overpowering and completely masked the flavor of the caviar, which should have been the highlight of the dish.
My partner ordered the chicken confit. While the presentation was visually impressive, the execution fell very short. The chicken tasted as though it had been soaked in salt, resulting in an unpleasant taste and difficult to enjoy. Beyond salt, there was little to no seasoning or depth of flavor.
I ordered the Wagyu ribeye, which was listed on the Altura website as being served with hasselback potatoes and roasted carrots. Instead, it was served with bean sprouts. I substituted the bean sprouts for Brussels sprouts and added a half serving of whipped potatoes, but even with these changes, the dish did not align with the description or expectations set online.
Overall, the dining experience felt underwhelming and lacked the refinement suggested by the menu’s “luxe fare” branding. The atmosphere and food preparation did not reflect a high-end experience. While I understand that living in Alaska can affect availability and execution, the quality did not justify the price point. For what we spent, we would have preferred to dine elsewhere and receive a more elevated and consistent experience.
Respectfully,
Our group didn’t try any of the beef dishes, but the scallops, black cod and halibut were perfectly cooked with rich and tasty sauces that matched a nice white wine perfectly. We had the gnocchi with an aged Parmesan sauce as an appetizer I could have happily stuffed myself with as a main course. The only dish that didn’t wow me was an orange fennel salad. That said, they served absolutely superb coffee made with a French press at the table.
While we didn’t indulge ourselves, they also have a robust wine list and some fairly impressive spirts on offer.
Unfortunately, the meal I received was a real letdown. The cook seemed to have little regard for quality or care in preparation. The burger was undercooked and lacked flavor, which was surprising given the menu’s promises. It felt as though there was a complete disregard for culinary standards.
To add to the disappointment, the overall kitchen environment appeared chaotic. I couldn’t help but notice a lack of professionalism that would not be tolerated in any serious kitchen. This kind of attitude toward food preparation is unacceptable. To make it worst one of the staff Mario, eas absolutely rude and unprofessional stay in the kitchen and work on food profile.
While I hope this establishment can address these issues, my experience was not what I anticipated and doesn’t reflect the high standards a restaurant should strive for.
