Listen to me! I have been searching high and low since moving to the DMV, and let me tell you—I have not found a great cheesesteak sub. UNTIL TODAY. I visited Al’s Steak House in Alexandria, Virginia, and my goodness, I am blown away!
This place is the Golden Standard. It is exactly what a cheesesteak sub should be! Most places serve you a soggy, uninspired mess, but Al’s? Al’s is a revelation. The steak is seasoned beautifully, the onions are fried with passion, and the balance of the mayo, lettuce, tomato, and those hots… it is absolute perfection!
Honestly, Al’s should hold a Masterclass for all the cheesesteak sub “wannabes” out there. They need to show the rest of the world how to be great, because right now, Al’s is in a league of its own.
The bread holds, the flavor is bold, and the execution is flawless. If you want to see what integrity in a sandwich looks like, get to Alexandria. This isn’t just a sub; it’s a masterpiece.

I’m in town from California… This place was recommended to me by a coworker… Best Philly steak recommendation ever…… I really enjoyed the food. Service was great. My sandwich was packed full of meat, mushrooms, peppers and grilled onions Accommodated the sandwich wonderfully… I definitely recommend this place note I am from California. I’ve seen some bad reviews and wanted to share my experience. It’s not a traditional Philly with LTM but it’s a really good sub. They give you a lot of portions for the price, here is a 12” which I was only able to eat half of in a sitting. The bread is what makes a cheesesteak special to me, and the bread here is very good. Also they package well for transport if you take it to go, so no soggy bread!

Don’t believe the bad reviews, they’re just opinions! I stopped by Al’s Steak House in Virginia for the first time today, and I’m honestly blown away. The restaurant is spotless, the service is friendly and fast, and the customers all seemed genuinely happy.
I ordered a Philly cheesesteak for pickup, and when I walked in and saw people absolutely devouring their sandwiches, I immediately ordered a second one on the spot. Best decision ever, it did NOT disappoint. Juicy, flavorful, and perfectly made. I’m already looking forward to coming back soon!

The good: nice portion size and reasonable price for subs.
The bad: their green peppers and onions were the sweetest green peppers and onions I’ve ever tasted, and I hate sweet tastes on anything with meat, with very few exceptions (one being sweet and sour chicken). But I absolutely hate anything sweet on my steak and cheese, so their super sweet onions and green peppers really ruined it for me. Another problem for me was that I asked for hot peppers (the relish) and I don’t see any on my sandwich. I think they put a few red peppers on it, if anything, which is a completely different taste that I do not like.

Excellent steak and cheese. Ended up driving 30 min one way for pickup and it was totally worth it. HUGE sub. Got a 12 inch and was worried bc I always get extra meat. I’m so glad I didn’t. For the first time ever I was actually impressed and surprised about how much meat was on it. Gf got a chef’s salad, which looked great but could’ve used a lot more dressing. One little cup was nowhere near enough. But I mean we got ranch so no biggie.
Excellent food, huge portion, and great service. Al’s got it goin right for sure. More dressing though. Lol.

I got the steak, mushroom & green pepper sub and it was pretty good—lacked some flavor/would’ve appreciated some type of sauce on it but was still decent.
Friendly staff and clean environment. Seating is very limited so probably best to do takeout. Price is reasonable for the area.

Steak and cheese is an 8.0 out of 10. When The owner AL was living I would’ve gave it a 9.5 out of 10. It just hit different when AL was running
