So I heard about this spot because of a passenger. The meatballs are plentiful, the bread is soft on the inside crispy on the outside, could use a tad bit more garlic though, im a garlic lover. You can order the side of meatballs and garlic bread and make two sandwiches out of it. Portions are a bang for your buck. Pastrami was good. The service was great. Order ahead, they are busy. @feo3924 on the tok to see more foodie reviews.

I walk in, (my first time meeting there) and the sandwich Cheif (maybe part owner or owner) idk but he didn’t smile. Turn off but he did make a good Italian submarine sandwich. One other thing is the boy tipped himself OR IT WAS AUTO TIPP of 3.01 that I haven’t noticed until hours later upon looking at my reciept. My sandwich was 13.00 but paid over 18. So I called and the guy said my cashier at lunch accidentally hit tip but also said he thinks its automated tip. So which is it?? He did say he would refund the tip. Im still waiting. U will however call tomorrow to find out why they think they can automate a tip from customers who haven’t tipped and not tell you. Thats shady and dishonest and I will never set foot in there again.

If you haven’t met Al, you’re missing out on one of Costa Mesa’s true hidden gems!! For over 30 years, Al’s New York Cafe has been serving up the kind of food that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon something special, and it’s clear why this place has such a loyal following!

Al’s is where you go when you’re craving that perfect slice of New York-style pizza. My pick: the NYC Special, piled high with sausage and pepperoni… just like you’d expect from a classic New York pizzeria, but right here in OC.

But it doesn’t stop at pizza. The deli sandwiches are a standout too. Their classic pastrami is piled so high, you’ll wonder how you’re going to take the first bite (hint: just dive in and don’t worry about it).

Also, LOVE that they offer pizza by-the-slice options, perfect for those days when you just need a quick fix!

Al’s is truly the kind of place where you walk in as a customer but leave feeling like a regular. This place is superb!!!

Cool little hole in the wall. They have a killer deal $9 for two slices and a drink. I happened to be working down that way for a week and I went there at least three times. Their pizza is tasty!

Al’s New York Cafe: A Taste of New York, Steps from the Sand!
If you’re craving authentic New York-style pizza with the perfect crust and exceptional service, look no further than Al’s New York Cafe, nestled just a stone’s throw from the beach. This place truly delivers on all fronts.
From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The service is outstanding, with attentive staff who make you feel right at home. They’re quick with recommendations and ensure your order is perfect, whether you’re dining in or grabbing a pie to go.
But let’s talk about the pizza – it’s simply phenomenal. The New York-style crust is a true masterpiece: thin enough for that classic fold, yet with just the right amount of chew and a delightful crispness on the bottom. Each slice holds up beautifully, never soggy. The sauce has that perfect tangy-sweet balance, and the cheese is generously applied and wonderfully melty.
Whether you’re a local or just visiting the beach, Al’s New Cafe is a must-try. It’s the ideal spot for a post-beach meal or a casual dinner with friends and family.

My husband has been coming here since the 90s and it’s amazing to see a restaurant stay true to its roots. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. We ordered meatball subs and a cheese pizza and it was pure perfection. Thanks to Al for all you do!

Nothing fancy but Yum.
But the flavor was on point !

Super friendly staff.
Our first time visit and we enjoyed better than some of the Gourmet pizzas in the neighborhood.

We will be back.

I’ve been going to Al’s for 20+ years since I was a kid living in Huntington Beach. I make a point to stop by for pizza any time I am in town or passing by. Best Pizza I’ve had in California!

Most authentic ny style pizza I’ve found in Orange County. They have a great lunch special for $7 (2 slices + large drink OR 1 slice, 1 salad, one drink). I recommend the cheese slice.

Located right next to 7-11.
