It is one of those places that I take out-of-town guests to show them something that isn’t tacky or over-thought. There are dollar bills tacked to the walls and ceilings, inside joke signs posted inside and out, and a rather nice (it once wasn’t that nice) outdoor area out back. The mixed drinks are poured well and the draft selection is perfectly fine. Never had the food. It is a place that is distinctly what it is and offers exactly what you would expect. It is also a place I always check to make sure is still open. Thankfully, it is!
It is also a place where, upon entering, you might get a brief look from the locals. Clearly, you aren’t a local. No biggie. And the service has varied from friendly to coolly serviceable. Again, no biggie. On a recent visit, with those out-of-town friends, it was just us, the bartender, a silently drinking fellow, and a couple at the video machines who clearly understood that it was 5pm somewhere. We had our drinks, they surveyed all the interesting items strewn about the place, and we left happy to have visited. Much like all the other times I have, again infrequently, visited.
One thing that has changed since my last visit? Last time, the mobile home next to the tavern was abandoned, with a spray-painted message saying “Mommy when are you coming home?” on the dented and dinged front door. It was funny, in that kinda’ tragic sort of way. This time? Someone tidied the place up. Progress and change . . . even in and around the lovely hamlet of Alpine (my tongue just bashed against my cheek).
If I lived closer, I would visit more often. But I don’t. Instead, I live in a town that once had The Amber Room and The Gables and other places that didn’t feel over-thought and contrived. So, I hope the wanderers of the world keep frequenting this place and keep it open so I can visit again in a few months . . . or years.
Thanks for another nice visit. Recommended.
We like old places and history. The rating is based on the overall experience. I would give it 4 stars for the menu and 3 for the facilities.
