Social Profile:

San Diego’s favorite soul food has a new location- Ali’s Chicken & Waffles is now open in Downtown San Diego. From it’s beginnings in the back counter of Donut Star, Ali’s Chicken and Waffles is bringing the same flavor that the city has grown to love to their new spot, serving a halal rendition of the famous pairing alongside shrimp and grits, fried chicken sandwiches, and more. Ali, the Ethiopia-born entrepreneur recalls the impression waffles made on him as a young immigrant first arriving in a San Diego school. By the time he earned a business degree from San Diego State, he and a friend decided to launch the Ali’s Chicken brand. His chicken is seasoned in a blend of three flours, with a spicy option heated by Thai chilis.

We stumbled upon Ali’s our first morning visiting SD and are so glad we did, because we went back twice more before we left! Quick service, delicious food, and big portions! Definitely try the coconut syrup, and the mac & cheese is one of the best we’ve ever had! Highly recommend Ali’s–we were sorry to leave it behind when we left town!

Came in for an unplanned lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The original chicken sandwich was juicy, hot, and crispy on arrival. It was definitely fresh, which was surprising since the wait was relatively short. The chicken and waffle was of a similar quality, and the coconut oil for the waffle is my new favorite thing to eat on waffles! Overall, a good experience, especially for the price.

For the building, the dining area inside was clean, and the bathroom even had a bidet!

Really enjoyed Ali’s chicken and waffles! Everything there is halal and so tasty. The chicken was so crispy and medium spice was perfect! The worker was very sweet and food came out within a few mins. Would highly recommend and go again!

If you like chicken and waffles, you will love this place. Got the combo 1, easy to get and go. Spicy level is very hot, but not too much that it’s not enjoyable. Their house specialty Ali’s sauce is a great pair. 10/10 place to stop at

Found Ali’s via EatOkra and decided to pop in for breakfast during our short layover. I was excited to learn that this is a halal restaurant which meant there would be zero limitations on what I could order. We ordered the breakfast burrito, the cluckfast burrito, mom’s tea, and mom’s iced tea.

The burritos were massive—especially for the price and they didn’t skimp in the crispy beef bacon. While we were dining, a group of workers came in to order lunch (always a good sign). The interior is humble, but the offerings are absolutely something to write home about. The tea was so good we ordered two more to go for our walk around the downtown area and were very grateful to receive them free of charge with well wishes for the rest of our trip.

We do plan to come back to San Diego, and this will be somewhere we return!

Incredibly delicious food at a great price! The chicken sandwiches are moist and crispy at the same time. Comparable to crack shack, but half the price. The location on 6th Avenue seems to be somewhat of a well kept secret. I wish more people would go and try it out. I don’t want this great little spot to close.

Will review quickly as I eat out so much.

Had 3 sandwiches and collard greens. Review:
The 1st sandwich was the spicy chicken sandwich. It had very good flavor and hot out of the grease so it was fresh, tender and juicy. The second sandwich was the chicken and waffles. It had great flavor and with the help of Smucker’s syrup they added on the side. The last sandwich was the original chicken. It was good also. The best was the spicy sandwich.

I was disappointed in the collard greens. Had very little flavor and the bacon strip in the greens was undercooked. Didn’t want to risk the chance of getting Trichinosis from a parasite if the pig was infected. My collard green recipe would blow the green off of these collards.

The service was great and the atmosphere decor bland.

I tried once and probably wouldnt try again as there are so many choices in san diego.

Ali’s chicken is a must try! I was absolutely blown away by their spicy chicken sandwich! The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and had the right kick of spice. Don’t even get me started on the fries – they were golden, crispy, and seasoned to perfection. Definitely one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I’ve had so far. Can’t wait to go back and try more from their menu!
