Food was fantastic, service was friendly and the place looks amazing 🙂
They just opened, so of course you’ll wait a bit for your food, just like every place when they open. But oh yes it definitely worth the little wait.
I had the shrimp enchiladas and a bar drink that were both delicious.
Will definitely come back soon 🙂
My husband and I were both impressed by how good everything was from start to finish. The beans are delicious, the chips always come out warm (which matters!), and the salsa is very good with just the right balance of flavor.
Overall, this place is a 10 out of 10. We’ll definitely back.
We left the margaritas -no or little tequila- and went to pay. They couldn’t give us credit for gift card because it was old. They eventually took off $25. Used to like the place.
It was our first time going since they reopened and we’re looking forward to going again.
Firstly, I used to go here all the time when I was younger before the fire. I grew up in Visalia and Alejandra’s was a staple Mexican restaurant.
When I saw they reopened online with a new look, I was excited to hit this place up the next time my wife and I were in town.
That excitement and preconceived optimism couldn’t help this place.
Firstly—and I want to stress that this is not that big of a deal, but it adds to the overall negativity—the remodel isn’t even that good. Aside from the bar area, everything looks like it was built very cheaply. I am sure a better job could have been done on a similar budget.
The Service: Not awful, but not great. It was confusing on entrance to even know where the host was, considering they had an empty podium at the first door, and you cannot see through the second entrance door easily where the other host podium is.
We were seated quickly though, which was nice. But it took a while for our server to come by, and even longer to get water for some reason.
But while the service was not exceptionally bad, it did not help the experience. Especially when part of it is that my food came out prepared incorrectly and I had to send it back. Which leads me to…
The Food: The worst part about this!
I ordered Ribeye Tacos with cheese. Figured “OK, this is a Ribeye taco, this has to be good.” When the food arrived the second time prepared correctly, boy was the first bite a huge letdown. The meat was very overcooked, and the whole thing lacked a ton of flavor.
The rice and beans were fine-ish, but nothing to write home about. Basic cheap-style rice and beans you find at almost any affordable Mexican restaurant. Still not even the best at that.
My wife and I also ordered one Mojito and Margarita respectively. These drinks were also just fine. What I would expect from maybe a boat tour bar, but not an established restaurant.
The food was disappointing in and of itself, but the part that really punched me in the gut was the check.
Price: we ordered
Ribeye Tacos with rice/beans
Fajita veggies with rice/beans (no meat, just the veggies)
Mojito
Marg
All of this was below what I would consider respectable quality for a restaurant of this caliber, but the check shocked me when I saw it said $97. I could not believe my eyes. I know I technically could have added this all up in the first place, but also I think we can all agree there is an expected price range you can anticipate at a place like this, and this was far above that for what we ordered.
And I really, really want to put this into perspective for anyone who takes the time to read this.
My wife and I live in SoCal now and have frequented a restaurant we really like in Huntington Beach (HB) called Sandbar.
Sandbar has an amazing interior design and really professional wait staff. It is a 2-minute walk from the ocean in HB.
At Sandbar all of the food is incredible and affordable. Right off the bat the equally free chips and salsa are miles better than Alejandra’s. If my wife and I go in and order food with no drinks, we will spend $27. And the max we have ever spent there is around $65.
$65 (as opposed to $97) for a place with a better interior, better staff, better location, wayyyy better food, and just a better overall experience.
How can a restaurant in a town that is so much more expensive sell a massively better product at a significantly more affordable price than Alejandra’s can?
I feel genuinely ripped off by Alejandra’s. In its current form I will not be returning, and I will actively recommend against this place.
But to the Alejandra’s staff hopefully reading this, I just want it to be known: nobody loves anything more than a comeback story. You can still fix this. I am not the only one writing a bad recent review, so I know this is not just a me problem. You can dig yourself out of this problem with a little ambition that leads to a genuine desire to see your customers satisfied.
