Snug, bustling Mexican-style seafood restaurant in a no-frills setting with a BYOB policy.

Algerias is such a vibrant seafood spot! We started with a refreshing complimentary ceviche before diving into two massive platters – the Charola Mixta with shrimp, crab, and mussels, and a shrimp & octopus combo. The shrimps leaned on the smaller side, but the sauce was so rich and flavorful, and the crab was surprisingly great too. The garlicky shrimp and octopus platter was an instant standout with bold and deeply satisfying flavors. Overall, we loved the warm hospitality and generous portions of the place with comforting flavors.

Love this place typically, but ordered takeout and spent nearly $35 on burned, flavorless food (see other better reviewed photos to compare). Prices are not worth the gamble/inconsistency.

TimeOut Chicago and Chicago’s Best needs to come collect their logos off this menu.
The Langostinos were sitting in a 3 inch bath of grease. I’m familiar with Nayarit style sauce- the best places I’ve had it is Los Magueyes and El Poblano in NWIndiana (that has since closed due to the economy sadly.) not sure what Alegrias is serving!!
The Pulpo Especial has 2 chili peppers on the menu and the description says this is supposed to be spicy. I could have fed it to a 1 year old. No spice, bland, and the strangest texture octopus I’ve ever had.
Bravo on the tostadas. Best tasting item on the table. Not sure how you get them so flavorful and flat, impressive! Keep that same energy with your seafood. Paying $$$ for greased up, unflavored, overcooked seafood is the worst.
Also- heads up to the owners, your waitress is stretched thin. Hire another. Although, once people start understanding how poor your quality is and this is just overhyped- you’ll be fine with the one I suppose.

The menu is full of affordable, shareable, flavorful platters— it’s a fun spot to go with a group for any occasion! My group of 6 shared the raw oysters, octopus ceviche, and seafood platter. Besides the raw oysters which were flavorless, the other 2 dishes were great. The ceviche was fresh and flavorful and the seafood platter was DENSE with both flavor and volume. Super good value and the service was excellent too. Also BYOB!

The best fish I’ve had in Chicago❤️
Great service and ambience.
Coconut shrimp could be better.. not so authentic but fish was amazing!
Would definitely recommend and go back to try other dishes as well!

Love this place! I’ve been coming several times a year for about 10 years. The sauce kinda changed over the years as far as flavor but when asked to make it extra spicy it reminds me of back in the day. Delicious!

The first time we came here we had an amazing experience from the service to the food. 2nd time was a HUGE let down. We made a reservation since we had a party of 8 and wanted to make sure we would have plenty of space at dinner time. Well there was one server and not very busy (like 3 tables of customers) (including us) and she was not at all attentive we had to ask for everything from water to plates silverware even the seafood shell crackers and waste basket for our massive seafood platter. To top it off she had added gratuity to our bill without letting us know (18% btw) which i would not have even given her $5 for the poor service she gave us. Then she added we can leave a tip if we’d like but looking at the total and the amount of food we got it was off so we asked of tip was already included which she said yes. So trying to get double tip sneakily I DONT THINK SO. not sure if 3rd time we will chance this even though the food was delicious.

BYOB. One of the best micheladas I’ve had in a while. The free crab tostada that is served when you sit down is a nice touch. I got the small ceviche and it was a lot of food. The aguachile was perfect.

Always honest opinions. Was a bit disappointed. Love seafood but this was like an explosion on a plate. You can’t tell the difference in anything. The shrimp, lobster and crab all tastes exactly the same because of the sauce they use. Nothing had prices on the menu. The muscles I ordered were really dry. Like they cooked and sat in a window drying up. Overall gave it 4 stars because I love seafood but probably won’t be back. Paid $150 for my plate and the shrimp weren’t even clean. Good but not worth the cost based on the quality of the seafood.

The consistent flavors with the appetizers were very good. Service was on par with the expectations of a small restaurant, and it’s byob with no hidden fees. A lot of places get shady with byob fees like charging for ice, charge for cans or a flat fee for “corkage”. The place needs to fix there front door, change up the music, and keep the place a little cleaner, aside from that I would eat there again
