Frankly I walked in with a low expectation but boy I could not have been more wrong!
Food:
Appetizers: Live Tree, Yellowtail Jalapeno sashimi, Mt.Fuji Shrimp, Vegetable Tempura.
I absolutely loved the yellowtail sashimi! Jalapeno and the ponzu sauce was a nice touch to cleanse out the palate.
Tempura batters were light, sauces were balanced, and nothing was overpowering-ly sweet or salty. Perfect taste profile.
Sushi Rolls/ Sashimi:
From omakase rolls:
Nobu, Out of control, Angry Sweet Shrimp.
If there is one pet peeve I have about americanized-sushi rolls, its the insane portion of cakey mushy sushi rice stuffed with cream cheese and drenched in ridiculous amount of sauces.
Akira is the exact opposite. Beautifully cooked sushi rice with perfect balance with fresh and tasty seafood fillings. Onion crisps on the top were such a nice finishing touch!
Everything was so good!
Sashimi/nigiri:
Amaebi (highly recommend!) – The fried head was absolutely tasty with perfect crunch and fat innards.
Octopus: only thing we did not really enjoy.
It was very dry and thin
Sashimi Dinner: FRESH AND THICK
Service was friendly and welcoming.
Seatings were comfortable and the restaurant looked clean and organized.
I enjoyed the calming music also.
As a person who always had to travel to NOVA for decent sushi/sashimi Akira was such a gem find. This would be my favorite sushi place of all Charlottesville.
Price could look high but the portion sizes and quality makes every penny worth it!
10/10 would come back to try their other rolls.
Service was fantastic—our waitress was incredibly attentive without being overbearing, and made sure we had everything we needed the whole night.
The duck bao buns were on the pricier side, but worth it. The skin was perfectly crisp, and the hoisin sauce clung to the soft, pillowy buns in the best way possible. A great mix of texture and flavor.
Definitely planning to come back.
Cons: for being in such a family-friendly area, no kids meal. Prices are high in comparison to other sushi places. The spicy miso ramen.. unfortunately was the worst Ive ever had. To the point I felt sick paying $122 for a dinner I didnt even enjoy. The hibachi chicken was ok, but nothing great.
The side of noodles was wonderfully garlicky, and the miso soup was a well welcomed aid on a cold winter’s day.
