This is THE place to go if you are craving actual sushi – not one of those california-deep fried-stuffed with mushy rice rolls.

Frankly I walked in with a low expectation but boy I could not have been more wrong!

Food:

Appetizers: Live Tree, Yellowtail Jalapeno sashimi, Mt.Fuji Shrimp, Vegetable Tempura.

I absolutely loved the yellowtail sashimi! Jalapeno and the ponzu sauce was a nice touch to cleanse out the palate.

Tempura batters were light, sauces were balanced, and nothing was overpowering-ly sweet or salty. Perfect taste profile.

Sushi Rolls/ Sashimi:

From omakase rolls:
Nobu, Out of control, Angry Sweet Shrimp.

If there is one pet peeve I have about americanized-sushi rolls, its the insane portion of cakey mushy sushi rice stuffed with cream cheese and drenched in ridiculous amount of sauces.

Akira is the exact opposite. Beautifully cooked sushi rice with perfect balance with fresh and tasty seafood fillings. Onion crisps on the top were such a nice finishing touch!
Everything was so good!

Sashimi/nigiri:

Amaebi (highly recommend!) – The fried head was absolutely tasty with perfect crunch and fat innards.

Octopus: only thing we did not really enjoy.
It was very dry and thin

Sashimi Dinner: FRESH AND THICK

Service was friendly and welcoming.
Seatings were comfortable and the restaurant looked clean and organized.

I enjoyed the calming music also.

As a person who always had to travel to NOVA for decent sushi/sashimi Akira was such a gem find. This would be my favorite sushi place of all Charlottesville.

Price could look high but the portion sizes and quality makes every penny worth it!

10/10 would come back to try their other rolls.

Absolutely loved my experience at this sushi spot. Every roll I tried was fresh and flavorful, but the eel roll really stood out—sticky, sweet unagi that hit all the right notes. The chicken and steak combo platter was another surprise hit, with a subtle sweetness that balanced beautifully with the savory meat

Service was fantastic—our waitress was incredibly attentive without being overbearing, and made sure we had everything we needed the whole night.

The duck bao buns were on the pricier side, but worth it. The skin was perfectly crisp, and the hoisin sauce clung to the soft, pillowy buns in the best way possible. A great mix of texture and flavor.

Definitely planning to come back.

I was pleasantly surprised by Akira. The fish is well prepared and presented. The staff is friendly, helpful, and professional. The ambience is casual and relaxing. Prices are fair and reasonable. My only real problem with the sushi is the rice — an often neglected but super essential part of the sushi experience. The rice here is relatively bland and chewy. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 5. I hope in the near future Akira management will devote more time and attention to the proper preparation of the rice. In the meantime, I’ll stick with the sashimi, which was superb. I have yet to try the ramen here, but that’s on my list. And many thanks to our terrific server who brightened our evening with her smile and attentive service.

Pros: Sushi was really good, as was the hibachi grilled veggies.
Cons: for being in such a family-friendly area, no kids meal. Prices are high in comparison to other sushi places. The spicy miso ramen.. unfortunately was the worst Ive ever had. To the point I felt sick paying $122 for a dinner I didnt even enjoy. The hibachi chicken was ok, but nothing great.

We go here for the sushi but the hibachi and ramen look good too. I wish the rolls were a little bigger and had more fish? I’d pay an extra buck or 2 to get a classic roll with more salmon. Lots of ginger, love that.

The sweet potato roll was wonderful, and I wish they had other vegan rolls that were that well done, not just putting something fried in the roll but adding further flavor and texture than the plain avocado roll has.

The side of noodles was wonderfully garlicky, and the miso soup was a well welcomed aid on a cold winter’s day.

The service was fast and the restaurant has a nice vibe. The speciality rolls were good, but a little expensive. The tuna roll and the salmon roll was 1/2 the diameter I was expecting, barely any rice, which made the end pieces very loose and meh.

Huge menu with high quality sushi and ramen. Ordered the spicy miso ramen, scorpion roll and Eiffel Tower roll— all were excellent, finished everything and it was just the two of us (yes we were starving and left way too full). Clean restaurant with full bar and plenty of seating. Service was fast and friendly, great spot for a quick bite! Our new go-to for sushi in cville, will certainly be back.

I haven’t tried all the sushi places around Charlottesville yet, but so far, Akira is my favorite. The portions are generous, and the food is fresh. The atmosphere is clean and modern. It’s definitely a staple for our family.
