Every time we go in here they serve our food consistently well. The staff is always nice and the atmosphere is welcoming. Having a good sushi place so close to home is an absolute treat. We are happy you are in Freeport and will come in often for years to come!

The Guy
Aki Sushi Tapas Boba in Freeport, Maine, offers a mixed dining experience that left us wanting more in terms of value. Upon arrival, we were asked if we had a reservation, with staff implying the restaurant was full. However, after being seated, we noticed it was only half-occupied. The staff warned us of short-staffing, which meant a delay in taking our order. Once ordered, they noted the kitchen food would arrive quickly, but the sushi bar was backed up.

True to their word, the kitchen dishes came out fast. The chicken wings were decent with a generous portion, and the gyoza was typical but satisfactory. However, the sushi took a while to arrive. The sashimi dinner, priced at $34 for 15 pieces, was disappointing—paper-thin, small slices that felt skimpy for the cost (see my photos). The Snow White specialty roll was also on the smaller side, though the rolls were generally okay. The fish was fresh and tasty, but the portions didn’t justify the price.

Service was a highlight, with attentive staff and the owner checking in multiple times. When I mentioned the sashimi’s poor value, she asked if I was from out of state, which felt irrelevant. She promised to “look into it” but offered no compensation. While the restaurant’s ambiance is lovely and the service excellent, Aki needs to improve portion sizes and value to truly shine. Overall, a nice spot, but the value falls short.

We left feeling still hungry. Unfortunately

Adding to my review, the owner’s response to my feedback about the sashimi dinner’s small portion was particularly off-putting. When I raised the concern, her immediate question was, “Are you from out of state?” This felt like a dismissive jab, implying I was just a tourist who didn’t know better and was prone to complaining. It was insulting and irrelevant—my sushi experience spans many places from Tokyo to Bangkok to New York city and Boston. Her question suggested they might treat tourists poorly, assuming they’re just one-time customers who don’t matter. This attitude undermines the otherwise pleasant service and further sours the experience at Aki.

We had our first meal on the first anniversary of the restaurant opening. The staff were very friendly and proud of their anniversary.
The food was delicious, well prepared and served. Extensive menu with lunch specials.
We had poke bowl with tuna and a sushi sampler plate. Both dishes came with miso soup. I would recommend while visiting Freeport.

Pretty good sushi spot for Freeport. We sat outside on the deck which was mostly shaded so we didn’t roast in the sun. It was lunchtime so we took advantage of the lunch specials. I had the two roll combo and my boyfriend got the poke bowl which he said was really good. The tuna was delicious and fresh. My two rolls were great. Both meals came with miso soup. We also got an order of shrimp shumai and they were fried. I had never had them prepared that way before but they were really good.

It was our first time and I’d definitely go back to try out some of their special sushi rolls. The list was extensive.

Had dinner here and the food was fantastic! Went with my wife and daughter and the server was great with all of us. The 4 specialty rolls that we ordered were phenomenal and the udon noodles for my daughter were delicious.

The only thing I would have liked to see is a kid’s menu. The plain udon noodles with chicken cost the normal entree price. I also understand that they aren’t a kid-focused restaurant, so I don’t blame them.

Overall:
Great food ✔️
Great service ✔️
Great atmosphere ✔️

We went here recently on our trip to Maine. The restaurant has a really good vibes and food is also pretty good. We paid $200 including the tips as it was calculated at the bottom of the receipt. Later on I realized that the tip amount was calculated with the post tax amount, which usually isn’t the case at other restaurants. Hope the owner would change that!

absolutely delicious. not the best sushi I’ve ever had but still very good and there was super friendly staff. Would definitely recommend. Chicken yakitori was phenomenal. Would LOVE to try more things on the menu. pricey but well worth it, and the sushi isn’t priced too bad.

Great place for sushi and boba! I ordered the crazy roll and spider roll. Both had great flavor and texture (the soft shell crab had an interesting interior texture but I think that’s just how it is). We also ordered the Oreo Brown Sugar Bubble Latte which tasted like a really nice cookies and cream drink and the boba had a lovely texture. The staff members are very friendly and helpful!

We love coming here. Don’t know about other reviews, but we’ve had delicious sushi and sashimi every time. Fish is fresh, rice is sticky, ginger is fresh, and Wasabi is plentiful. The staff is always courteous and pleasant, and the sushi chefs work quickly to get our order prepared. It always comes well presented and prepared. That’s why we are repeat customers. Plus, Portland is ridiculously expensive, so making the trip here is an easy choice.

Another thing we like are the tempura crunch type rolls, and they’ve got some innovative menu items along those lines. By the way, the owner has added a couple of Turkish menu item. One is “Sigara Börek.” Give it a try!

Wanted my boba fix and I would say the boba was chewy and soft . Tea level is good .Reminds me of boba from Boston. I approve of the boba here. I got the brown sugar boba milk tea .
🙂
