No MSG No Garlic Foodie
We’ve been coming to Akbar’s Own for many years. Their naan is easily the best in downtown Vancouver. After COVID though, we noticed that the korma recipe was not quite the same, as though they’ve changed chefs or ownership, but it was still good. Since I’ve stopped consuming cow’s milk, I’ve become more sensitive to dairy. The last time we visited, I found out that it is possible to have a vegan option of vegetable korma with coconut milk. So that’s what we tried. I have to say it was very disappointing. Frozen vegetables are very telling in a stew. The carrots were ’empty’ inside, definitely frozen, and the green beans also tasted very soft and soggy. We’ve eaten their vegetable korma so many times that this version didn’t measure up at all. It tasted like our vegan korma was specially prepared for us at the last minute with frozen vegetables. We also ordered another vegetable dish which was OK, but the sauce was not as amazing as the korma. I’d be happy with just korma sauce and naan. But at least the korma didn’t have detectable garlic. Well, if it didn’t, we wouldn’t have kept coming back.

I have been here several times with my family, and each visit we try a different style of beef or lamb. Everything has been consistently delicious. The savoury salted lassi pairs perfectly with the meal, and the naan is always fragrant and freshly made. Every visit has been a pleasant dining experience. Kadhai lamb is currently my favourite! This is the most delicious Indian restaurant I’ve tried

Great food with generous portions. Ordered butter chicken with plain naan, lentil soup and samosa chaat. Everything tasted amazing, food came hot and samosa chaat was a full plate serving. I definitely recommend this restaurant. (Also chill vibes and clean)

Tried a sizzler lamb dish and a tangy chicken dish. The spice is interesting and tasty! The naan is chewy and freshly baked. Price is affordable and yet the presentation/service is upscale. Also loved the decor and vibe of the restaurant. Very cozy. It’s a shame that it’s tucked behind subway construction. It’s truly a hidden gem.

Had a wonderful dining experience at Akbar’s Own in Vancouver. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the flavorful Thali and fresh naan. I’d like to thank Prashana, she was attentive and made the meal even more enjoyable with her friendly and helpful service. Highly recommend!

2024 Update: Don’t let the construction deter you from this delicious food. The people here always have respectful demeanors and are efficient in their service. The food is quality and fresh and the flavours are consistently good.
There is pleasant and light music playing and it feels relaxed and peaceful. It’s a good place to go if you want to enjoy the company of your companion along with good food. It is also very clean.
One of my favourite Indian restaurants in Vancouver. Quality, taste, and pleasant service. Great environment too.

So good, I loved their homemade chunky paneer, seared to perfection, served on a sizzling platter. This was our 1st visit and we will definitely be making this our regular Indian restaurant. The prices were amazing, we paid under a hundred for 2 starters, two mains, rice, naan and a decent bottle of red wine. Service was fabulous too.
This literal gem is hidden behind the scaffolding and tunnelling mayhem that is currently W Broadway, must be so hard running a business with that going on.
