I’m going to be honest. I expected more from the reviews. 5 stars for the service. The rest… not so much.

I ordered the steak bento with a side of Hamachi.

The salad and soup came quick. The dressing was surprisingly tasty. The soup was very average.

The bento was full. It looked good. Unfortunately it was very bland. The fried rice was bland and boring. The California rolls were nothing special. The vegetable tempura was okay. There was a weird thousand island-type sauce that I think was for dipping the steak cubes in. The teriyaki steak cubes were tender, but once again barely flavorful – even with the teriyaki sauce. The onions and zucchini were good.

The sashimi arrived after my bento. The 3 pieces were pretty good, and I liked the presentation.

The only option I had to add flavor was Wasabi and soy sauce. So that’s what I did.

All in all, a highly forgettable meal, I’m sad to say.

Lunchtime. My first experience dining here at this sushi restaurant. Sushi rolls were delicious. The Japanese chicken curry was a tad salty and watery but the two carrots, three pieces of potato, and the three pieces of chicken were well cooked. I poured the curry over my rice and it improved the balance of flavor immediately. I am looking to have lunch here again with my friends.

This was one of the best hibachi/sushi places that doesn’t have the actual hibachi grill I’ve been to. I ordered the filet teppanyaki lunch. The meat was cooked wonderfully, the veggies were that perfect level of caramelized on the outside, but still crisp, but softened Just enough from being grilled. The rice was tasty (not breath-taking, but I mean … It’s rice). All props to the staff; The cooks did an excellent job in a timely manner, The hostess and waitress were both super friendly, super helpful and very prompt. The price point was great, especially for the lunch portions.

** Walking in my first impression was this smells amazing! And I was right! Not a perfect score, but definitely an A+**

Fresh, colorful, and delicious sushi in Durham!

Akashi Sushi is a hidden gem inside Park Terrace Center. The menu offers a wide variety of sushi, hibachi, and noodles—perfect whether you want a quick bite or a sit-down meal. The sushi presentation is absolutely beautiful, with vibrant colors, generous portions, and fresh ingredients that taste just as good as they look.

The rolls are creative yet balanced, and the sashimi is fresh and tender. The avocado-topped rolls drizzled with sauce were a standout! Service is friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is relaxed for a casual meal.

If you’re in the Durham area looking for quality Japanese food at a fair price, Akashi Sushi is definitely worth a visit.

Ya want the quintessential lowkey Japanese food joint to frequent? This place is it. Good food, good prices, nothing crazy, homey little dining spot. I came here all the time over the past 10+ years, and will always do so when I get back in town.

Here’s a polished, warm review you can use:

I’ve been coming to Akashi for many years, and it continues to be my favorite spot. It’s a true family-owned restaurant, and you feel that warmth the moment you walk in. The food is always outstanding and incredibly consistent, and on the rare occasion something isn’t perfect, they take care of it right away with genuine hospitality. After more than 8 years of dining here, it’s no surprise they continue to grow—places like this are rare. Highly recommend!

Our granddaughter chose Akashi for her dinner out after her first Nutcracker performance. She is nine and loves the California roll. The bento box here is a excellent value and the food is uniformly quite good. The server went out of her way to accommodate our just turned three year-old grandson. The service is timely and consistent but not overbearing. The people are kind. It’s located in a strip mall and not anything fancy, but the atmosphere was quite cozy.
