My hubby and I made a reservation for Valentine’s Day at Akar and we were blown away at how amazing our experience was. The service and atmosphere were top notch. Each bite of food was a treat. We started off with the black garlic udon noodles and the lobster rangoons. The rangoons were crispy and had big chunks of lobster meat, while the black garlic udon noodles were cooked & flavored to perfection. For our entrees, we chose the scallop special and the lamb shank. The lamb was so tender, it fell straight off the bone. Both entrees were amazing and left us with borderline licked-clean plates. Highly recommend Akar to anyone looking for unique and flavorful dishes in the Clayton area. Quick note: they only take reservations via phone so be sure to call to save yourself some wait time, as the restaurant is on the smaller side.

There is no better experience for the senses in St Louis. The food is consistently the best in flavor, seasoning, temperature, and portion. The ambiance unparalleled. Noise control is so well controlled. You know it because you don’t have to think about it. The service impeccable and easygoing while being fully professional. This quiet gem of a restaurant is the type you don’t review, because you really don’t want anyone else to know…like sharing your best sitter, you just don’t want to do it. But they are so good, cannot resist to chase accolades widely. (Just keep it to yourself please. I still want table access.)

Akar is one of the most underrated restaurant in STL, in my opinion. Every meal I have had there is 10/10 and so flavorful. The best way to describe the cuisine in 3 words would be “elevated asian fusion”, but that doesn’t even begin to describe the dishes. My partner had the duck entree’ and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. I had the fish special as my entree’ and I can’t even begin to describe the flavors- like nothing I have ever had in STL. The service is always excellent- friendly and attentive but not intrusive. This place deserves a James Beard award.

Very nice vibe . Food and service excellent . Very interesting menu . Really enjoyed the food and experience. Was not sure if I would like an Asian inspired / fusion food but very pleasantly surprised . Will definitely go back again so many more things to try .

My wife and I came here for an early Valentines dinner, and the staff at Akar knocked it out of the park. Sanjay was our host, and he was incredibly attentive and friendly. My wife had the tart and tasty Blackshire cocktail, and I had a variant of an Okd Fashioned, both superb. We split the cabbage, carrots, fried cauliflower, and gnocchi- more than enough for two people (we had leftovers!) Everything was just top notch, my wife’s favorite was the roasted carrots and I really liked the gnocchi. Highly, highly recommended!

Came here on a rainy Tuesday evening for dinner with a friend and could not have been more pleased! Without a reservation, we were seated immediately. They have the coziest booths nestled in a modern open design layout. We ordered the gnocchi, popcorn chicken, rangoon ravioli, and asparagus risotto. All of them were absolutely delicious! Flavorful, cooked perfectly, and came out quickly. The restaurant is clean and well kept and the staff are attentive and very knowledgeable about menu items. I am looking forward to returning so I can try the duck breast and shrimp PKM!

Had our Valentine’s dinner at Akar and it was just awesome, as usual. My wife went for the gnocchi, I had the short ribs, and we kicked things off with the cabbage — all of it spot‑on.
Bernie always makes the night feel easy and fun. Just one of those places we never get tired of in St. Louis. Always a great time.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the wait staff. The drinks were unique. The one i had, serai, was very good. I lived the addition of black pepper on the rim. The pickled cabbage is hands down the best I’ve ever had. I would order that by the bucket! The other two meals i had were mediocre.
The crispy chicken was fine. But the chicken itself was under seasoned and the breading was too much. It distracted from the amazing herbs and glaze. The breading was initially crispy but began falling off. Id have preferred a lighter maybe cornmeal breading or none at all with a crispy skin.
The scallop dish was mediocre as well. Everything was good until i got to the orzo pasta. Pasta was not necessary. It was very starchy/floury? The dish would have made a great appetizer if the lobster curry was lessened and the orzo removed. The mango/scallop pairing was great!
The olive oil cake for dessert was very pleasant. Not too sweet. There was a lingering bitterness though but it isn’t ruin the experience. Overall I’d try it again but try other dishes to see if the more traditional Malaysian foods are better.

Tried this place for the first time the other day, and will be back! The food was delicious and interesting! I really loved the cocktail with thai chili and togarashi on the rim. The risotto and soft shell crab were both fantastic. They were great about accommodating dietary sensitivities and the staff was very nice! The patio was lovely.

Overhyped and pretentious. Service was dreadful, the server clueless. Main courses were btw $43-49!!@@ amd then the UNreal tipping suggestions 25, 30, 35%. Another ex of STL “chef/owners whose inflated egos are reflected in the absurd pricing. Oh, and here’s a suggestion Akar; perhaps spend $5 for a batbroom door lock. Skip this place, only “wannabe Local Food Guides” fall for the hype.
