Upscale Flavor in Downtown Lewes, but Something Was Missing

While on a business trip to Lewes, Delaware, I was in the mood for Mexican and Agave came highly recommended, so I decided to give it a try. What I really enjoyed right away was the location. This isn’t along the main roadway or highway area that most people associate with Lewes, the more business-heavy stretch with fast food and chain spots. This is tucked into the charming downtown area near the canal, surrounded by neat little houses and a truly quaint, cool atmosphere. It’s a great setting for an evening out.

Agave is definitely more of an upscale Mexican restaurant, and the interior reflects that. Stylish, clean, and thoughtfully designed. I took a few photos because the ambiance adds to the experience.

One thing that surprised me was that they don’t bring out complimentary chips and salsa. At most Mexican restaurants, that’s just part of the experience. Not a deal breaker, but it does set an expectation when you sit down.

I started with the empanadas. They looked different from what I’m used to, but they were very tasty and full of flavor. They came topped with a fresh chopped tomato mixture, almost like a light salsa, along with a lime. After squeezing the lime over the top, the flavors really popped. Unique presentation and very flavorful.

For my entrée, I ordered the veggie burrito. I asked the waitress if it came with chips on the side, and she said no, which was a little disappointing, especially considering the price point and upscale feel. When the burrito arrived, the presentation wasn’t great, as you can see in the photo, but once again, the flavor delivered.

Overall, I’m a bit mixed on Agave. The portion sizes were average, nothing extraordinary, but the food itself was definitely flavorful. For me, the lack of chips and salsa and the absence of a side with the burrito made it feel like something was missing, particularly at this price level.

If I could offer one suggestion, adding chips and salsa or even a small side with the burrito would elevate the experience and better match the upscale positioning. Flavor-wise, they’re doing a lot right. For now, though, I probably wouldn’t return on my next trip.

I just met a new friend at Agave in Lewes, and everything — the food, service, and atmosphere — was perfect!

Since my reservation specified our visit was a date, the staff went out of their way to set us up with a super private and cozy table, which was great for our first chat.

If you’re looking for something similar for a couple, you might want to ask for either of the two tables tucked into the bay windows on either side of the central front entrance on 2nd Street. Just make sure to leave the other one for us — Agave seems like it’s just as great for second and third dates!

We really appreciate the thoughtful staff at the Lewes location for helping two new friends connect.

This was a fresh and exciting culinary journey. The dining area was stylish and inviting, and the atmosphere was vibrant and energetic. Oh, and the food was amazing! I had a steak burrito which was generously filled with a symphony of flavors and textures. The richness of the creamy queso expertly complemented the robust flavor of the perfectly grilled juicy steak. Agave is a wonderful, modern Mexican restaurant in the heart of Lewes.

The nachos are incredible. We thought we would be trying new things, but we had the best nachos of our lives.

Agave is a gem along the Route 1 corridor into the Delaware beaches. If you are looking for really great Mexican food and a beautifully decorated setting with Central American ambience, this is the place for you. My wife and I had the blue cheese and steak quesadillas, which were a refreshing take on an old classic, and the pupusas, a dish popularized in El Salvador, which we’ve had a few times in Central America, and these were as good as anything there. My absolute favorite dish, however, were the steak nachos served on a tray with homemade pickled jalapenos. This was some of the most tender steak I’ve ever had on a nacho platter. I am willing to go as far as saying that this is the best nacho appetizer I’ve ever had. I would go back just for the nachos. Great cocktails as well. While the corridor is flooded with food options, do yourself a solid and stop into Agave. You won’t regret it.

Hungry and wanting some good Mexican inspired food? Do your stomach a favor and stop here. Great menu, affordable prices and amazing service. They have a bar as well. We had absolutely no wait when we got there around 3pm on a Saturday. Even with most of the tables full we were waited on and served quickly. Food was really tasty and a good amount with our meals. The wait staff was amazing. Loads of room at the table. I highly recommend going and we will be going back for sure.

Heard a lot about this restaurant and was excited to try. Service was friendly, we had probably the best table near the window. Started strong with good margarita and delicious salsa & good quality guacamole. The entrees were total let down. Fish tacos with the price tag 27$ possibly the worst I tried. Fish was overcooked, disgusting fried tortilla and no flavor. Dry rice and beans with zero flavor. Burrito and enchilada were nothing to write home about. Overpriced.

Amazing! We visit DE once a year from NC for our anniversary and this was the first time to Agave. We will absolutely be back! Kim was a great waitress, friendly, quick and attentive. We started off with the strawberry Fresca and Cobalt margaritas which are well worth the money… enjoyed some of the most delicious empanadas we have had.. split the surf and turf burrito and finished with churros and the khalua cheesecake. Everything was so flavorful! If you haven’t been, you’re certainly missing out.

Been here often over the years and it never disappoints. For starters, the goat cheese, pine nut is my go to guacamole. The Garlic Pepper Shrimp is perfectly balanced by the mango lime salsa. The Birra dilla is a quesadilla for the carnivorous that satisfies.

One of my favorite places to go when I am in town. I didn’t give 5 stars for service because 1 of the 3 of us that went to eat didn’t get his drink and had to wait. I also asked for a piece of chocolate cake to go and she forgot. Normally I don’t have any issues. The food is always good and so are the margaritas.
