I had the dolma and beef kabob with chickpeas. The dolma was warm and sticky, perfect. The beef kabob and chickpeas were also both great. I don’t usually eat beef but wanted to try it here. It is an order at register and sit at table place. I definitely recommend this place.

I was in Richmond yesterday and wanted to check out some Afghani food. I’ve had a great deal of experience with the restaurants up in the Washington DC area. This restaurant appeared to have some good reviews but I was pretty disappointed. The Samosa was good and the Manto dumplings were ok, but the tomato and lentil sauce was also pretty bland when it should have been more rich tasting. The most disappointing was the lamb shank Qabili (Kabuli) was definitely not up to par. It was a very large portion, but it was very bland, lacking the warm spices of cardamom and cinnamon. It was more like steamed basmati rice with carrots and raisins. It did not seem to be cooked in the broth like it should have been. The lamb shank was large and cooked well but again, it lack flavor and seasoning. The flatbread apoearded to be store bought abd reheated. I don’t live near any Afghani restaurants, which I have enjoyed a lot in the past. So I was looking forward to this on my trip to Richmond. However, if I return to Richmond I will definitely try a different restaurant.

NOTE: in response to your response, I didn’t say cinnamon on the lamb, I said seasoning (salt, pepper). I referenced it in the bland rice.

“Qabili, also known as Kabuli Pulao or Qabili Palaw, is Afghanistan’s national dish, celebrated for its rich blend of savory and sweet flavors.
It is a fragrant rice pilaf traditionally made with tender lamb or chicken, caramelized carrots, raisins, and a blend of warm spices like cardamom, cumin, and cinnamon, often garnished with almonds and pistachios.”

I recently tried Afghan cuisine, and it was a really memorable experience. The food has a wonderful balance of spices—flavorful but not overly spicy. One of the highlights was the Kabuli pulao, a fragrant rice dish topped with tender meat, carrots, and raisins that gave it a perfect sweet-savory balance.

The dumplings, especially mantu, were also fantastic, served with a rich yogurt and tomato sauce. Everything tasted homemade and comforting. Afghan food feels like a unique mix of Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and South Asian flavors. If you enjoy trying new cuisines, Afghan dishes are definitely worth exploring.

Food: 5/5
Ambience: 5/5
Location & parking: 4/5

Location & Parking: Located on a busy street with paid street parking, this restaurant was a little hard to find at first. Although it looks unassuming from outside, it’s bright and spacious inside with the lovely aromas greeting you at the door.

Ambience: I got seated and placed the order right away. While my order was getting ready in front of me, I had a chance to go around and explore the restaurant. It was a super spacious restaurant with two levels of seating areas. Very bright and surprisingly guarded from the noisy traffic, it was a great spot for a quiet lunch.

Food & service: My order of Kebab & fries served with Naan, Tzatziki sauce and Afghani salad was made to order and tasted very juicy and flavorful.
Spiced perfectly and the right portion size for 1 person, every bite of the freshly made naan and kabob was perfection.
My server was so courteous and attentive and he prepared my food in less than 20 minutes.

Absolutely Delicious & Warm Hospitality!

I recently dined at the Afghan cuisine restaurant near VCU in Richmond, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment I walked in, the aroma of freshly prepared spices set the tone for an amazing meal. Every dish was bursting with rich, authentic Afghan flavors — perfectly seasoned meats, fluffy rice, and fresh-baked bread that melted in your mouth.

What made the visit even more special was the owner’s kindness and genuine care for guests. They personally checked in to make sure everything was perfect and made us feel truly welcome, like honored guests rather than just customers.

The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, perfect for sharing a meal with friends or family. If you’re looking for fresh, flavorful food and friendly service, this is an absolute gem in Richmond. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Food was so good I forgot to take pictures!

When you first walk in you order and wait at your table in another room. Inside was extremely clean, quiet, with a choice of upstairs or downstairs seating. Possibly due to the weather but my husband and I were the only ones dining, I’m shocked there weren’t more people.

I ordered the Lamb Shank, Dolmades, and my husband got the Afghan burger. The food portions were big and bursting with flavor! Lamb was falling right off the bone, the broth was perfect, not too oily, not too spicy, perfectly balanced. It was served with bread, rice, side salad, sauces, and I believe chickpeas. My husband’s Afghan burger was beautifully put together with veggies, meat, and fries wrapped up. The order of Dolmades came with a lot and were great too!

If you’re craving something savory this is definitely the place to stop in and enjoy! I can’t wait to go back.

I had a pleasant experience at Afghan Cuisine. The food was flavorful and clearly made with care, especially the rice and meat dishes, which were well-seasoned and satisfying. Portions were generous, and the prices felt reasonable for the quality and authenticity of the food.
The atmosphere is simple and casual, more focused on the food than the décor, which works well for a relaxed meal. Service was fine, though it could be a bit quicker during busy times.
Overall, it’s a solid spot for authentic Afghan food in Richmond. With a bit more attention to ambiance and service speed, it could easily be a 5-star experience. I’d definitely come back and recommend it to anyone looking to try Afghan cuisine.
