We went in a bit early and were seated a bit after 3:40PM. The restaurant was almost empty at the time.
After the second course (pasta), we asked for bread to mop up the sauce because the flavor was pretty good but the serving size was small. The bread service took more than 10 minutes to come to our table, but the bread was only a bit lukewarm and came with hard butter, not softened or seasoned, so I was a bit perplexed why it took that long. (Also the bread service was not included and cost $12 extra for 4 half slices of bread and two soft pretzel sticks. Make that what you will.)
After the bread service, and the pasta plates were removed, we waited for more than 30 minutes for the venison to be served. The venison felt barely lukewarm, while the potato gratin was hot as expected, making me suspect something wrong happened to the kitchen. My date was not impressed by the venison, either, commenting on the lack of flavor without the blueberry gastrique sauce.
The dessert was not impressive, either. I didn’t like the dollop of the whipped cream as it contributed no flavor to the cake, and that the ice cream was more of a sorbet with large ice crystals and sloppy consistency.
Finally, we finished the 4 courses after exactly 2 hours, after paying $98 per person (as priced, excluding everything else like beverage and a la carte). My date didn’t find the meal worthwhile for the price and felt sorry for me. Ugh.
I highly recommend this restaurant. We had the tuna tartare and smoked spinach salad to start. They were both so good. I can’t pick which one I liked better. For dinner I had the veal schnitzel with fries. It was to die for. I’m not a big seafood person, but my partner had the seafood risotto with shrimp, scallops, octopus and smoked farm egg. He absolutely loved it. I tried a bite of his risotto and it was so tasty.
The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, and the service was always excellent.
Bonus tip: they also sell their sausages to take home and cook yourself, they’re amazing and absolutely worth picking up.
Affäre is the kind of place that makes any evening feel like a special occasion.
garlic shrimp toast, risotto, venison, barramundi, and Apple strudel were all excellent!
