I recently visited Abuelo’s in The Colony and had a truly enjoyable experience overall. The atmosphere was warm and inviting — perfect for a relaxed dinner. What really stood out, though, was the exceptional service. Our server, Keith, went well above and beyond to make sure everything was just right. His attentiveness and positive energy genuinely elevated the entire evening. If you’re lucky enough to get Keith, you’re in great hands!

As for the food, it was a bit of a mixed bag. I ordered the fajita salad, and while the steak was cooked beautifully and had great flavor, the onions and peppers didn’t quite live up to the “fajita” name. Instead of the charred, smoky vegetables you expect with fajitas, they seemed more lightly warmed than grilled — missing that signature sizzle and flavor that ties a fajita dish together.

That said, I would definitely come back. The overall experience was fantastic, and I’d love to try other items on the menu. Just hoping they give that fajita salad a little upgrade in the future!

We had high hopes of eating here, especially since a student in my class gave me a gift card for Abuelos. When we walked in we were pleasantly surprised by the pretty decor and atmosphere. After we were seated they brought tortilla chips and different salsas to our table while we waited for our food. I ordered chicken enchiladas and my husband got the steak fajitas. I mostly enjoyed my chicken enciladas but they were not the tastiest that I’ve had. The sides were just so so, nothing special. The steak fajitas had a good flavor but not as tasty as we have had elsewhere. The big disappointment was the wait staff. Our server Cameron took our order with minimal chatting which was fine however, she never came back throughout our whole meal to see how we were doing and I desperately needed a refill on my drink. She kept walking by us without making eye contact. Finally I was able to get a knd bus boy’s attention and asked him if I could have a refill, so he said he would see if he could help. About 7 minutes later, our server stopped by, quickly put a refill on the table without one word and took off. She seemed bugged that she had to do that! Finally, right when we were finished, she suddenly was sweet and kept asking if she could get me another refill and turned into a kinder person. I don’t know if she was having a hard day or not, but the whole experience was not a positive one and I’m pretty sure we will not be going back. And I love Mexican food!!!

I had the grande, the chile releno was delivious, empanadas were too, enchiladas and crispy taco were very meh.
Our server I forgot what her name was but she was the best! she clocked that we don’t eat pork and gave us a heads up on everything with pork in it and i highly appreciated that, even helped us navigate our order and talked to kitchen staff about switching items.
The vibe was nice.

Went for the first time and we loved the.ambience, service and more importantly food. Tried the house speciality- stake and enchilada, and I loved it. Stake properly cooked with and chewy enchilada. Also tried the jalapeno bacon wrapped shrimp. The best I tasted so far. You have also got a drinks bar as well. I would definitely recommend this place to try out Mexican cuisine.

My husband and I love this restaurant! When family comes to visit they ask for best margaritas and food. The sea bass is excellent. The grand has everything! Tres leches cake is delicious. Try a El Hefes margarita! Everything is delicious and wonderful! Great staff

Where better to eat at for Cinco de Mayo, then a Mexican restaurant. This was our time to an Abuelos in a long time, but we will definitely be putting this location on our regular dining list. Yessica was a great server, attentive, friendly and full of recommendations. Dave, one of the managers, was friendly and talkative, but watch out… He is a Longhorn fan! Gig ’em Aggies Dave!!! And I can’t forget the sombrero guy, what fun he was having!
The decor was up beat, fun and clean, loved the red trees. The food was great, had the enchiladas… Mmmmm, I’ll be back to try the fajitas. Happy hour looks good also. Hope to see you there!

Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant Review:

Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant offers a delightful dining experience with its vibrant atmosphere and authentic Mexican flavors. The salsa served is exceptional, bursting with fresh, robust flavors that perfectly complement the chips. I had the fajitas trio, which was a fantastic choice. The combination of chicken, beef, and shrimp was cooked to perfection, each bite juicy and flavorful. The corn tortillas were another highlight, fresh and delicious, adding an authentic touch to the meal. Overall, Abuelo’s provided a memorable dining experience with its excellent food and welcoming ambiance. Highly recommended for anyone craving genuine Mexican cuisine!

Long overdue! This place was a gem that I discovered on Cinco De Mayo just on a whim.
Came here with the family and had a great time: service was very polite, friendly and attentive. The food was great – went with their special Mahi Vallarta. Tortilla soup was tasty. Really appreciate the salsa choices and vegetarian menu.
They have a nice bar and the ambiance is very interesting, fun and eclectic. I loved the art by John R. Thomasson and also bottles of tequila with Jean-Michel Basquiat art prints. I can always appreciate the little touches.

The three salsas that came in the beginning with chips were excellent. The food was good. It was a nice place, service wasn’t great. Our waiter never really came back to fill our drinks and never offered us dessert.
