The bakery was first established in 1976 on 69th Street and 15th Avenue (Bay Ridge Ave) in Brooklyn, New York. In 2000, we moved the store to Matawan, NJ to bring a unique family tradition to every table. Our in-house approach to baking allows us to produce fresh, homemade confections, which sets us apart from other retailers. At Abbate, our ultimate goal is to deliver a sweet experience, with love at first bite – and an authentic taste, bred in Brooklyn.

As I am a transplant from Brooklyn, trying to find an “original” Italian bakery was hard to do.
I found it at Abbate Bakery and have been a loyal customer for the last 10 years. It is one of those places you’re always happy you stopped at. Every holiday and special occassion calls for a stop at Abbate. Their 7 layer cookies are a standout, especially when they offer them with apricot or raspberry filling. Everything tastes fresh and homemade, like a real old-school Italian baking. Their cakes are always great and never disappoint, whether it’s for a special occasion or just because. There’s so much to choose from. (And don’t pass up their Lard/Prosciutto bread.) It’s a true old school neighborhood bakery that you’d find in Bensonhurst. You will not regret stopping by!

Placed the order the day before from California for a surprised birthday cake for 35-40 people to be delivered to a near by office. The bakery was chosen randomly after reviewing few bakeries in the area.
I highly recommended the Abbate bakery for any occasion to everyone. Trust me you will never ever regret.
The manager JEN was professional, listen to all the details customer is requesting. She will answer all of your questions no rush at all. Jen was helping with any suggestions. Highly reliable, punctual was kind to take a photo of the cake forwarded to your iPhone before delivering.

Excellent Italian American bakery with all the classic favorites. The eclair had the best custard cream I have ever had, brownies are excellent and did not yet try the Napoleon or lobster tail. Italian bread had great hard crust the way it should and makes a great Italian sandwich. I found this bakery because I was looking for a place to buy some pastries to bring to a friends house as I was coming from a distance in south Jersey. They were so good I decided to stop again on the way home and bring an assortment of pastries for back home. Really loved this place, it reminded me of the great bakeries of Long Island and Brooklyn of the 70s and 80s.

Grew up in Brooklyn eating delicious Italian pastries and cakes, and Abbate is one of the few bakeries that equal the taste and quality of those bakeries. Purchased an Italian cheesecake and Rum baba there last month and both were delicious. The Rum baba also had custard and was drenched with the flavored syrup. Service was very friendly.

Usually most things here are good. However, I ordered a 7” vanilla buttercream vanilla cake with cannoli and chocolate custard fillings. The whole cake was not good at all. I was embarrassed to serve it. The buttercream was almost bitter and had a bad taste. The cake and fillings were flavorless. For $32 it was a disappointment and half of it was trashed after 4 slices were not fully eaten.

This bakery is the best!!! When I arrived home from Italy, I asked them for a dessert that I had in Rome called Maritozzo they looked it up, had their baker make them, and called me to let me know…and they were delicious, exactly like in Rome!!! This bakery is above and beyond the BEST!!!! The pastries are SOOOOO good there and the staff are so thoughtful and accommodating ..take the time to go you will not be sorry!!!if I could give 10 stars I would!

Over the past few years, I have gotten a few special occasion cakes from Abbate Bakery and each one has been a work of art that is equally delicious. The most recent was my wedding cake, which was absolute breathtaking. I came to Abbate Bakery with a few ideas with reference photos and Lindsay pulled the elements together to make my vision a reality. She helped advise my husband and I on what would work best and also helped us to decide what flavors would be best for the occasion. Our guests had nothing but great things to say.
In comparing all of the cakes I’ve gotten, it’s clear that there is true talent at this bakery and a passion for creating top-quality desserts. Abbate Bakery truly delivers on what its customers want and will go the extra mile for them, which, in my book, makes them stand out from others I have gone to. The best part of this bakery is the level of professionalism and the feeling of talking to a friend. I highly recommend!

Ok, so I ordered my sister a custom cake for her 40th bday. I live in California and I sent them a photo and had a phone consultation regarding the cake and flavors I wanted in the cake.
I was excited to see how it turned out. I wanted a simple, rustic, feminine looking cake. I did not want a traditional looking cake plastered in old school icing. I also wanted a cake that was light with fruit inside.
My sister never got to have a wedding cake and recently divorced, so I wanted this cake to be very special.
The cake was a huge hit. People at the party asked where I got the cake. My sister, who generally doesn’t eat sweets, wanted another piece.
I also ordered some pastries and couldn’t believe how good they were. I was like, this place is like an old-school Italian bakery from NYC… I did some research, and I found out they were in Brooklyn since 1976, and in 2000, they moved to Matawan, NJ. How lucky are we!!
Now, every time I come to NJ to visit my family, I will be stuffing my face with their Canolli’s and lobster tails!!!

In my opinion this is the best bakery in the state of New Jersey.
They can do anything and the taste is the best of the best.
I would recommend to anyone in NJ even if you have to drive for them it’s worth it.
This is the cake we made for my sons first birthday and it was spot on word for word exactly how my wife wanted it.
