Reviews
—The service was great and the atmosphere is nice but by the time I got home (about 20 minutes later) and we ate it, the crispy chicken wasn’t as crispy. It tasted good but not amazing. I’m sure this is much better if you eat it in the restaurant.
—The combo chicken, some poached some crispy, was good (3/5) at home but again I think it’d be great (5/5) in the restaurant.
—The rice is good. There’s chicken fat in the rice, which makes it different from a lot of rice dishes out there. If you like rice and like to try different foods, this is definitely a great thing to try.
—The “a ma dried noodles” (wheat noodles with sauce & crispy chicken) was my favorite I’d definitely get it again.
—The broths are good, too.
All in all, I’ll try it again if I’m in the area and I can sit down and eat.
The place is always popular. We went there Sunday evening and able to get a table without a line. We tried a few different dishes,. including rice noodle, their signature steamed Hainan chicken and fries chicken.
The Hainan chicken is really impressive. Extremely tender and juicy. Almost falling apart on the chopsticks. Rice is nicely flavored with chicken fat and juice. The portion is good. It’s an excellent comfort dish if you like chicken.
The fire version is also tender but not as impressive as steamed version. The noodle has a nice kick that builds up at the end. For those who prefer spicy food, this is a good choice.
We went with the signature, chicken and rice dish. We also went for the noodle soup.
All were worth ordering.
For the chicken and rice, we went for the combo because it let us try more menu items in a single order. Chicken was tender and juicy. The dipping sauces made for a flavorful bite. The rice was also flavored, if I were to guess it tasted like it was cooked with soup broth.
For the noodle soup, it’s kind of similar to pho, but the soup is seasoned differently, but still delicious nevertheless.
I recommend a visit, definitely with trying.
Took a sip of my soup while waiting for everyone’s orders to come to the table, and dam was it delicious – deep umami chicken flavor that’s not too heavy, balanced well by the fresh scallions. Almost wanted to dig in immediately, and thankfully service was very fast.
It’s everything you could ask for for hainanese chicken rice – tender, poached chicken, that has a good, slightly bouncy texture, coupled with perfectly textured gelatinous skin – I’ve been to some places where they sous vide the chicken, but honestly that kind of makes the chicken mushy, which is not the case here.
Coupled with a big serving of fragrant chicken rice, and that delectable soup, I don’t remember the last time I was this excited staring at the plate of food in front of me.
Honestly, the crispy chicken as just as good as the poached – it’s not your typical breaded fried chicken with a thick crispy batter – this one had a lighter crunch, with the same perfectly cooked chicken underneath.
They give a variety of sauces, including the two pictured which is a good balance of sweet, sour and spicy, as well as the typical ginger scallion, as well as chilli crisp. Have to ask for the sweet soy sauce.
Overall, at $19 a plate (or 21$ if u get the combo), I can’t think of a more satisfying Sunday brunch spot. Next time I’ll make sure to get a Thai iced tea as well.
Ordering and payment were very straightforward. Everything is done via a QR code at the table, which made the process quick and efficient. The food also came out impressively fast.
I started with the broth, which was flavorful and comforting, and the rice was nicely fragrant. I liked pairing the poached chicken with the soybean ginger sauce and the crispy chicken with the sweet chili sauce. They also offer three additional condiments on the table. I tried the ginger scallion sauce. While it was aromatic, I found it bland. I would have loved a bit more seasoning, especially since ginger scallion sauce is usually my favorite with chicken rice. The pickled vegetables that came with the combo were a great touch and really helped brighten the dish overall.
Would I say this is the best chicken rice I’ve ever had? Definitely not, but it is comforting and satisfying, and it definitely hits the spot if you are craving chicken rice. I would be interested in coming back to try their kuy teav next time.
Service was pretty minimal. No one checked in or refilled my water, but given how busy it was, I am willing to give them some grace.
