Defensive owner doesn’t read well and doesn’t like criticism
… I didn’t call the staff lame and greedy, they don’t set th prices, you do! So that comment was you owner, you’re in a small town, your level of service and price points would not stand in a bigger city with more options. The people of Athens should be offended.
All the Monterey restaurants in Tennessee are lame, this one is especially mediocre. The drinks are watered down and it’s ELEVEN DOLLARS for a spinach dip, no drink specials so the weak margarita was $9, run away, don’t walk, these people are greedy for your money but like a lot of Mexican fare it’s overpriced and Americanized.

We were not impressed when the brunette behind the counter went to seat us at our table and her shorts were so short you could see her butt cheeks, which was very unprofessional and it looked like we were at a strip club and not the expensive kind! The menu was a couple dollars higher than most other Mexican restaurants in the area and the lunch menu was pretty limited. The food was ok, although I didn’t like the rice with lima beans, peas and green beans mixed in with it. One of us ordered a water to drink and it tasted horrible, probably the worst I have had. Whatever you do, DO NOT ORDER A WATER! Plenty of parking with two handicap spaces at the front door. Family friendly (other the hostess’ shorts). The mexican rap music was way too loud.

Love this place. When I’m looking for good food at a decent price and ready for a good sized meal when I’m in Athens, Monterrey Mexican Restaurant is always my first choice.

Portions are a little small, second batch of salsa looked like tomato soup, the refried beans looked like pinto bean soup and the lunch special for the small portion was 11.50. Quality is slipping compared to like El jinnete or Mexi wing. The tex mex burrito was better than the lunch special I got for sure.

I asked for water no ice and they bring water with ice. Had to ask for extra napkins multiple times. No one brought me a check. Food was mediocre and other restaurants in the area have a much better pollo picoso.

Excellent place to eat! Our first time here, and EVERYTHING was delicious! I had the Pork Burrito and my wife the Shrimp Chimichanga. Both came with a side of Queso. Hers had a side or Guacamole, Sour Cream. and a side salad.
