Reviews
However, the service did not meet the level we expected from an upscale restaurant. Throughout the evening, our interaction with our server felt uncomfortable due to several comments that came across as condescending. For example, we were not allowed to hold onto the wine menu, which gave the impression that it was assumed we would not be ordering a bottle or couldn’t afford it. One member of our group also felt rushed when deciding on dessert, despite not being advised of any seating time limits. He strictly gave a straight up “no” when asked if he could come back to us for dessert. Additionally, a remark made when we requested extra bread to finish the duck parfait felt unnecessarily pointed, as if accommodating the request was an inconvenience.
While the other staff members around us seemed warm and welcoming, our particular experience felt unexpectedly dismissive. We understand the comments may have been intended humorously or sarcastically, but they ultimately came across as inconsiderate and detracted from an otherwise enjoyable meal.
Before even talking about the food, we were taken care of with astoundingly warm and diligent hospitality from the lovely staff with a special shout-out to Roux-Roux and Munish. Wonderful gentlemen that offered excellent suggestions for first-time customers. If you happen to get these gentlemen as your servers, you lucked out. We even got a surprise visit from the Chefs that helped to make the night all-the-more exceptional!
Girlfriend and I decided to go with their seasonal “Winterlicious” dinner option that included an appetizer, main, and dessert. We went with the Mushroom Soup which was creamy, and surprisingly light, along with the Beef Tartare that was a fresh and umami-filled appetizer that included different textures consisting of varieties of chips + sourdough. The Beef Bourguignon was so tender and buttery you could use your fingernail to cut it, while also pairing amazingly with the polenta. We also ordered the Flame-Roasted Cauliflower to accompany the other protein-loaded main and made for an otherworldly combination. For people who dislike super sweet desserts, the menu offered options that were not terribly sweet, while still maintaining its delicious quality. Could not go wrong with any of the options, but the Date Cake and Normand Apple Tart are absolute game changers. Also ordered one of their specialty drinks, “La Carnivale”, and was very enjoyable even for non-drinkers like my girlfriend.
The ambiance paired along with the attentive staff made the experience just as memorable as the food itself, and if anyone had any doubts about trying the food, clear those doubts now. And, to all of those who speak negatively about the service or food, try treating your wait-staff with some compassion and understanding – don’t expect good service or food if you aren’t a good customer.
Special thanks again to Roux-Roux, Munish, Chef David and Chef Chris for such a lovely and unforgettable night!
I started with the beef tartare ($22), made traditionally with chopped beef mixed with Dijon mustard, shallots, capers, and parsley. Instead of mixing the egg yolk in, it’s thickened into a silky spread and placed on the side so you can control how much richness you want. My favourite bites were the ones where I could smear a bit of yolk and top everything with a garlic crisp.
I loved the carb selection of bread and root vegetable chips so you can switch up textures as you go. A side of pickles helps cleanse the palate and makes the dish feel less heavy.
The flat iron steak frites ($42) was well executed for a table of twelve. The steak arrived cooked to a perfect medium-rare and was surprisingly tender for such a lean but flavourful cut. You choose a sauce (béarnaise, shallot jus, or herbed butter), and I went with the jus – rich and savoury without overpowering the meat. It doubled as the perfect dip for the fries.
La Plume’s thin fries remind me of the golden arches, but with a stronger potato flavour and far less salt. They’re delicious. So much so that we started the meal with an order of their truffle fries ($12) to share. In my books, there’s no such thing as too many fries.
I will definitely be back. The service has noticeably improved as well. The hostesses were more accommodating than before, and our server was attentive throughout the meal.
Unfortunately, the food itself did not sit well with either me or my friend. We ordered the sliders, and shortly after, we began feeling unwell. We’re not sure if they were improperly prepared or if the quality of the meat wasn’t up to standard, but we both experienced food poisoning in the evening and couldn’t eat anything else.
Personally, I spent the entire night feeling extremely ill and unable to keep anything down, which was very disappointing given how much I was looking forward to this experience. It’s unfortunate because the space and atmosphere are wonderful, but the food experience overshadowed everything else.
I hope this is taken as constructive feedback, as I truly wanted to love this restaurant and hope improvements can be made.
The waiter Rolland’s I believe was his name was super helpful and attentive, and the cocktails were very good. The music was great by the live DJ, we had such a fun time. Definitely a great vibe for conversation and we will definitely be back. Perfect to spend time with friends or a nice date night.
I ordered the 2‑course option and started with the French onion soup, which was rich, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. For my main, the steak frites were cooked nearly to perfection. They offer three sauces, and I went with the classic béarnaise, which paired beautifully with the steak. The fries were addictive — crispy, well‑seasoned, and hard to stop eating.
We also had the duck, which was tender, perfectly cooked, and honestly one of the best I’ve had.
Great vibe, great service, and really solid food. With standout dishes like the duck and steak frites, this place is an easy recommendation.
Service was professional and friendly, and everything arrived in perfect timing. Prices are fair considering the location, quality, and ambiance.
Overall, La Plume at The Well is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for an elegant French brunch in downtown Toronto. I’ll definitely be back to try their dinner menu soon.
My wife and I came here for lunch on our anniversary. The food and service was 10/10. They gave us prosecco on the house before lunch along with some chocolates for dessert which was very sweet.
They also gave us menu recommendations on their favourite dishes and what was most popular. Hands down this may be the best french onion soup Ive had in the city (its a favourite dish of mine).
