J Gumbo’s and Meena have been feeding our family and friends for many years now. We visited the very first time based on a craving alone, but walked away with sated appetites happy to have found local owner’s who care about and remember their customers and they’ve kept that same standard of service up since. While J. Gumbo’s is a chain restaurant, the owner’s Meena and her husband Raj, make your experience feel like anything but. Meena has always graciously allowed our family to customize how spicy our plates are, she almost always remembers which toppings each of us prefers and which we would like omitted, and has always gone above and beyond to make sure we enjoy our meals. When I say we have been coming here for many years I write this review from both pre, during, and post Covid days so that tells a lot about how seriously they take quality and customer service. During Covid we switched to to go orders once things started opening back up and Meena never let us down even during Covid. Good quality food and good quantity for the price.
When we began coming many years ago our oldest son was known to pop up from a booth to fais do-do and we appreciated that no one was ever bothered by it, in fact local patrons and even Meena herself were occasionally known to join in. While the music might not make you want to get up and dance, it is a fun addition to the lively decorations that help imbibe that Canjun spirit and make up part of the experience.
Now to the good part, we are quite set in our ways of what we order now, but my husband has tried most things on the menu and has liked them all. We always get the crawfish dip as it is a whole family favorite. There are always large chunks of meat and a perfect balance of gooey cheese and spices. If you like things with a little more kick, don’t be afraid to ask for it! Meena will make sure you are taken care of. If you are a wuss about spicy foods like I am she’s got your back there too, I have had zero issues with things being too spicy for me when she makes my plates. I always get the Jean Lafitte and she always holds my jalapeños (hubby’s pictured) and our kiddos love the Po’Boys and usually get a bag of chips and a bottle of Abita root beer. There is a fountain machine as well but they do offer several bottled varieties and do have beer available for sale as well. We rarely have room for dessert but I absolutely adore the peach cobbler so if you think you can squeeze it in, it is worth it!! Since Boudon Balls have popped up on the menu they have quickly become a favorite for my gentlemen.
I’ve seen people talk about expediency in other reviews and while they are not drive thru fast, they get food out faster than some other traditional sit down restaurants around Hixson. The service has always more than made up for any waits we had that may have been longer than usual. As with any dining establishment when more orders are going in service will tend to slow down a bit. We use the time to chat as a family now, but it was a really cool place to play Eye Spy with ours when they were younger.
Feel free to put a call order in for a specific pickup time if you are hungry but worried about time. There always seems to be a good stream of to go orders when we’ve been.
I also want to mention since Mardi Gras is right around the corner, they have had King Cakes available for those looking to take it up a notch. I can’t speak if they will this coming February but I imagine they will.
Parking is free and you can easily drive to the back roadway (or their parking lot) to avoid Hixson Pike traffic.
P.S. Eat the bread It’s worth the carbs!

Food is delicious and well priced. The owner was on-site and explained the menu thoroughly. Wife has shrimp po boy and was excellent. I had the 3 entre sampler with voodoo chicken, jambalaya, and gumbo. All were delicious with the jambalaya being my favorite. We will definitely hit this place up again when we are in the area.

We were pleasantly surprised with good food but an even better experience from the staff. The owner helped walk us through every step and ensured we ordered the right dishes for us. The gumbo was so good, we had to order a quart to take home.
If we were any closer to the area, this would be a regular spot to pick up a po boy for lunch. The crawfish was delicious.

Wow! The food is fantastic! I ordered 3 entree samplers (Bumblebee stew, Seafood gumbo and Crawfish etouffee) Wow wow wow! Delicious! My husband got a gator poboy and he said it was really good. We will definitely come back when we visit our family in Chattanooga next time! Two thumbs up!
Service was exceptional. The owners are really nice and friendly.
Ps. The spicy pepper is legit!

Amazing!! I ordered the Jean Lafitte and it was top-notch delicious. My husband ordered the red beans and rice, he is very picky because he grew up in Louisiana and he enjoyed every bite. Our son ordered the Entree Sampler with jambalaya, gumbo, and crawfish etouffee. He said he is definitely coming back. They have generous portion sizes and exploding with authentic Cajun flavors. We will definitely be coming back over and over again! The owner Mina was so hospitable and friendly. (We got mango pudding and boudin balls to go!)

We tried their Boudon Balls with home made remoulade for an appetizer, then Shrimp PoBoys with seasoned fries for our entree. Everything was delicious, but service was very slow. On a Wednesday, we were the only patrons between 5 to 6:30 pm (except for one person picking up a to-go order). I hope that business picks up, because they are really good!

I don’t leave many reviews, but this place is worth the time. Food is excellent, the service exceptional. Good portions and fair prices. Can’t emphasize how kind and friendly the owners are (assuming they’re the owners). This feels like a local hole-in-the-wall place, and I mean that as a compliment.
Husband and I had driven past this place a bunch and never stopped, so we gave it a try tonight. We’ll be back!

The owners are such wonderful people and the care they take in their craft is shown through the meals they make. Everything about the meal that I had was superb. I will for sure be coming back with my friends and family.

The owner Meena went out of her way to make sure my son‘s bachelor party was provided shrimp boil and jambalaya. My son said the food was amazing and meena provided exceptional customer service. She provided delicious food at a fair price. We don’t live in the Chattanooga area, but if we ever visit, we will make sure to stop in and eat a meal here because my son was raving about the food
