Food: The ramen was very light and had an authentic feel but the tonkatsu broth was not as rich as I expected. The kuro karage came out piping hot and had a great flavor. It has a unique look but the charcoal meant people taking any medications couldn’t try it.
Service: The staff was super busy so check-ins were minimal, but they were friendly when they did. Another small inconvenience was that the fried chicken arrived when we were all almost done with our bowls of ramen.
Atmosphere: The interior is cozy and the bar seating is great for watching the kitchen. It feels like a great place for a solo meal. The one negative would be the ripple effects of the small space. There was always a line but with the cold people were constantly opening the door and crowding the entrance as they waited.
I went for the Kuro Ramen, and it was perfect. Rich, jet-black broth with a deep umami punch from the garlic oil and soy tare, perfectly chewy noodles, tender chashu pork, and all the classic toppings (soft-boiled egg was spot-on). It’s bold yet balanced – not too salty, just intensely flavorful. Portions are generous, and at around $16, it’s a steal for the quality.
Service was friendly and quick, even on a busy Friday night. They nailed the little things like fresh ginger and chili oil on the side. Only docking half a star because the seating is a bit tight (communal tables), and it can get steamy from the open kitchen. But honestly, that’s part of the authentic charm.
If you’re craving legit ramen in Boston, hit up Tora – especially the Kuro. 4.5 stars, no question!
The karaage came out looking a bit burnt, but it tasted surprisingly good. The ramens were all rich, bold, and so flavorful. Every bowl was delicious and satisfying. We will definitely be back!
This is a little cash only ramen bar with like 5 tables and two bar like seating arrangements. the waitstaff are friendly and unobtrusive, often allowing their guests to eat at their leisure. the kitchen literally whips out their bowls in minutes. Sometimes guests have to sign up and wait for their table outside (visitors beware, it gets cold + very windy in Boston).
I come here fairly often and have tried most of their ramen bowls. My personal preference is their Aka ramen with a few select extra toppings. Since I usually come here for dinner I’ll often order sake and a cheeky little app to accompany my meal.
(I am being so FR about coming here often, some of the staff know my regular order LOL)
We will be returning!
Food- I took the shiro ramen and the seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was good but a bit sweet. The ramen was one of the worst ramen I have ever tasted, the meat itself tasted funny.
Service- I had two waitresses one was great, the second was unpleasant and made me feel uncomfortable.
Do not recommend.
