We were here for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. What a great time. We had reservations, you will need them. Tony was our server, been here 30+ years, and it shows. Knew the menu, recommended items and was very attentive. We started out with drinks and the deviled egg flight and the house made Chips and Dip. (Good choice on the chips Tony) Main course was the Ribeye with Brussel Sprouts & Chicken n’ pickle with shredded Au Gratin Potatoes. We were so full that we got an Irish Coffee and Amaretto Coffee for dessert. The bar did a great job with the drinks. – Bottom line: People were great, Bar was great, the food was very good and the Kitchen was fast for a busy Wednesday night.

My husband and I dined in for our 1st wedding anniversary, we were served by Tony who is an absolute top knotch staff member. He was very welcoming and made you feel nothing less than important. We think he is our new favorite server. Both of us enjoyed our flavorful meals and beverages, and the jello cake was amazing. The kindness from all staff was impressive, the atmosphere was devine, and the night time view of Duluth was beautiful. The experience was memorable, we will be back. Thank you Tony!

Cozy atmosphere with awesome views!
We wanted something light and fresh to start off our meal. Tony our server recommended the Crudité. It consisted of assorted Vegetables, Pickles and Olives with Toasted Sunflower Seed Dressing. The sunflower butter was amazing and made the vegetables pop! For dinner we had The 8oz. filet mignon and it was good but we also ordered the Yabba Dabba Do and that was phenomenal! Braised Beef Long Rib in Beefy Whiskey Glaze and Seared Wild Mushrooms. The whiskey glaze was memorable and the meat was tender and melted in your mouth. Sides were the au gratin potatoes. It was like a lasagna made of potatoes very very good. However the best part of the night and our experience came from our server Tony! He was friendly and knowledgeable and made awesome recommendations to make our dinner experience top notch. If you go here to eat be sure to ask for Tony to be your server… he is a valuable asset to this restaurant!

I’ve been around Duluth long enough to have eaten here in its former incarnations as both JJ Astor and Top of the Harbor and I had always been underwhelmed by the food and felt they relied upon the view to draw patrons. I noticed it had been renamed, remodeled, and seemed to be under new management. I made date night reservations and it was finally the dining experience I’ve been waiting on – literally for years!

I do recommend reservations – the system through their website was easy and user friendly. The new style/decor is fun and on a Friday night they seemed to be running smoothly; we were greeted and seated within minutes. I saw another review mentioning they were there within days of opening and things were running rough – based on our experience they’ve hit their stride and the kinks have been smoothed out.

We had Candace and she was wonderfully helpful. We were delighted with everything we ordered. LOVE that they have a mocktail menu and that the bartender put thought and effort into them and thus the mocktails are more sophisticated and complex than just sprite and grenadine. The peach rose was so good and the Hope-ade was both good and intriguing – I must try the cardamom and mint combo at home. My date said his prime rib was cooked to perfection and my chicken pickle – while intimidatingly huge upon arrival – was just damn good. And the pickles do indeed taste homemade.

They need one of those “flip this switch if the bathroom needs attention” lights, they were out of paper towel in the ladies room.

We’ll definitely be back to try more!

I had really high expectations for this place as I tried the St Paul location and it was fantastic. I’ve always wanted to come here for the view, which did not disappoint! Absolutely beautiful and can’t top it. The food however, I have mixed feelings. We got the octopus which was delicious!! For our meal, we both got the lamb. Honestly it was hard for me to eat it It’s recommended to be served medium rare, and it was literally jiggly and raw. The yogurt they serve with it tasted bitter and sour. Overall, I definitely would try them again but was hoping for better entrees. Side note would be that it was extremely hot in there.

The view at JJ Astor’s is wonderful, the rotating floor is a great way to see Duluth as you dine. It reminds me of the former restaurant in downtown St. Paul called the Carousel. While the atmosphere of the restaurant is great, the brunch menu is quite subpar. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of Perkins quality food. I ordered the avocado toast and Turkey bacon, and the bread was supposed to be sourdough, and it certainly didn’t takes like it was sourdough. Very bland. The Turkey bacon was also simply a sausage patty, very small and lacking flavor again. I felt really bad for our server, as they were short staffed and she seemed like a newer employee as she kept forgetting to bring things to the table. I think if the upped the quality of the menu of this restaurant it could really have some potential.

Been here two times now and the most recent was exceptional. Thank you Tony for the great service and polite conversation! The young, tall female bartender (sorry, can’t recall her name) was great also.

The Duluth area is fairly limited in terms of more fine-dining restaurants and the JJ Astor is doing a lovely job of setting the standard. The prices are not unreasonable because the food was good, however, the allure of this place is 100% the atmosphere as it outshines the menu. Love the timeless decor which adds to the classy feel.

We had a wonderful time at Apostle Supper Club in Duluth last night! I had the rainbow trout with crispy kale and roasted radishes, and my wife had the fish fry with aioli tartar. She also had a wonderful old fashioned and we shared the homemade pineapple inside down cake with vanilla bean ice cream. Yum! The ambiance was casual but romantic, and it was fun to see Duluth and beautiful Lake Superior from all angles while the restaurant rotated as we dined. (Lots of fun selfie opportunities!)
The food was fabulous, but even it paled in comparison to the stellar service our server Tony provided. He was knowledgeable about the menu and the history of the restaurant. He provided us with information about the owner of the restaurant and all the charitable work they do around the world feeding the hungry (check out “Purpose Restaurants”) He also talked about how they took care of their staff during the pandemic layoff period when bars and restaurants were forced to close temporarily, even paying for rent and groceries for their employees.
This was our first visit, but definitely will not be our last!

We tried dinner at the totally revamped JJ Astor’s…the Apostle Supper Club. To be completely clear, our visit was on the 6th day they were open.

Always start with the positive. The management seems super pleasant. We’ll touch on that again later. The ambiance is also delightful. It’s still the normal rotating restaurant, with some tidily revamped decor. I love the midcentury vibe, furniture, and food choices. My grandma would have felt right at home here.

The less-positive…they are definitely having opening kinks. The night we were there, they had double booked everyone due to a technology error. They were booking on two different reservation systems and yikes. They ended up having a paper waiting list for those of us who had reservations. We got a drink and sat in the “lounge”. Why I can’t be served food in the lounge is kind of beyond me. At least snacks? There were side tables with many of the seats and I feel that we could have been served, perhaps. We did get some drinks and settled in for our wait. The bartenders seemed overwhelmed and slow, and our drinks, although delicious were inconsistent. The first and second Tom Collins didn’t taste the same.

The wait staff is…green. A table next to me tried to flag down a passing hostess (not a waitress) for salt, and she told them they needed to ask their server when she came back. Um, what? The waitress we had, however, was phenomenal. So, hit and miss.

Once we were seated, our server got us settled with another cocktail and some fondue. It was delicious. Thick and tasty. My one complaint is that it was served with forearm-sized broccoli trees. Maybe some more bite-sized, eat with a fork foods? The salad that came with the entrees was sad. Wilted romaine and overripe tomatoes.

But then entrees came! For entrees, we got the Chicken & a Pickle and the Chicken Fried Lobster. Both were delicious and generously portioned. If I was to order one again, it would be the chicken. The pickles taste like they’re made in house and the chicken was juicy and delectable.

In short, I think they’re having some opening kinks. I think it will be great after a little time to settle in to their groove. I’ll be back though.

This restaurant has a great view, turns 360, a beautiful view! The food was too fried and not a wide variety! Service is good! Table reservation is preliminary. Although we sat in an almost empty room for a long time, people began to approach closer to 7 pm. My family expected more.
