Although I have been to Cherokee sooooo many times, this was my first visit to El Cajelito. I’ve seen it so many times, just never pulled in. This trip, it was a mission. Large front and atrium dining areas. In the rear is the cantina. The manager was so accommodating. I was the only one that requested seating at the small bar. He put on music for me and asked if I wanted to hear any particular artist or genre of Latino music. I said David Bisbal, of Spain. What a voice. He looked it up and
rapido – boom, the music came to life. They have live music Thur, Fri, & Sat evenings.

Ok, on the food and drink. They have a decent offering of Silver, Blanco & Repesado tequilas. I had a shot of my favorite, Herradura, and a shot of Don Julio Blanco, with a Victoria, throughout the meal. Although not on the menu, I asked if I could get a spinach & cheese dip. He was quick to say yes. I got the Dos Amigos — one beef & one chicken enchilada with lettuce, tomato, & sour cream. Yes, as usual, I started eating before thinking to get a photo. But, I did get a photo 2 bites on.

They offer individual dishes from the menu or you can ask for the buffet. How cool is that! My dish had good flavor and nicely presented on the plate.

When on Cherokee, please make El Cajelito one of you dining experiences. Remember the live music toward the weekend!! ENJOY!!

I went to this restaurant on December 31st and I liked it very much. From the moment you walk in until you leave, the customer service is exceptional. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent. They make amazing handmade Mexican tortillas!! The prices are reasonable. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend it.

Mexican restaurant in shopping area short before entrance of Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
The food was relatively bland with little flavor. The portion of lunch is small and may not be enough to satisfy your hunger. They have a buffet which I did not try.
Service however was excellent with friendly staff

Pleasantly surprised by my visit here! We ate dinner on a Friday night with a fairly lively crowd. We were seated immediately. The chips and cheese dip were great – I loved the salsa! Lots of good options on the menu – the fajita taco salad hit the spot for me. Margaritas were also very good! Staff was super attentive and friendly. Atmosphere is that of a typical strip mall Mexican restaurant but the giant bear photo opp is a nice touch. I would definitely eat here again!

This restaurant adds a good diversity to your appetite on a Smokies trip!
We were a group of a 8 at this restaurant.
They served us very quick and understood our needs correctly.

We loved the food overall, it was tasty and well crafted.

However, the dessert disappointed us to some extent.

Seating and ambiance was very good. Staff was friendly!

Overall, good vibes and recommended.

Found this yummy gem while sightseeing! I got lunch #2, burrito and rice both were delicious and the boyfriend got lunch #12 he kept saying how yummy it was. Service was awesome everyone was friendly. our waitress was on point! She kept our drinks full and read my mind about needing cheese on my burrito. Highly recommend!!

First time eating here. The place is a little run down. The ladies bathroom was bad. The waitress first brought us chips and salsa and 1 tiny bowl to put it in. Most places give each person a small bowl to pour your salsa in. I asked for another bowl and didn’t get it until later when our plates were served. I ordered the lunch #1. A crispy taco, enchilada, beans and rice. The taco was lying in enchilada sauce and was a sobbing wet and limp taco shell! The enchilada had no flavor. Rice was also not very good. Husband had a chicken burito that looked good, but he said the chicken was very tough. The waitress never checked on us again. We even waited for the check, went to the bathroom, still no check. Finally went to register and he said I guess you got no check. He was correct. He was very nice, but we will not return.

Not sure where all these great reviews are coming from. Maybe we had an off day but judging by the pics, I’m thinking not. The food had very little flavor. The salsa and chips they give you when you sit down had almost no flavor and no heat at all. I am someone who can handle mild to medium but nothing more, and I am telling you this had no heat or seasonings. I ordered the fajita burrito and it was not good. The chicken had no flavor, the veggies barely saw the grill and there were tomatoes inside. I may not have noticed that they were in there, to be fair, when I read the menu, but nonetheless, it wasn’t good. The service was very good and our waitress was nice and attentive. This place is pretty run down and I’d say it is resting on it’s location and is a bit of a tourist trap. I would opt for The Rice Wagon, which we had yesterday, for some different flavor if I am ever in the area again.

Came from Wisconsin, and decided to try this place. OMG, food was amazing. I had the plate with chicken, steak, shrimp and chorizo with homemade corn tortillas. Delicious. My boyfriend had the steak tacos on flour tortillas…They were bid and he loved it. Food was 100 percent authentic. Definitely will come back when I visit next year
