Potchke – Knoxville – a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant

That’s what “potchke” means, and this Jewish deli-style restaurant in Old City in downtown Knoxville is indeed riffing on the classics (don’t tell bubbe).

In town for training and it was my last day in town. I attempted to catch Matt Robb’s for a biscuit but they sold out before I got there. Matt referred me here and I’m forever grateful. This was absolutely a worthy replacement for my missed blueberry biscuit! Potchke is such a gem! I ordered a lemon poppy babka and the lox bialy sandwich. I should have ordered it open faced because I definitely would have finished it. The capers and the crunch of the radish was such a perfect pairing with the lox. Wish I found this place sooner – I would have been here every day. Highly recommend.

The taste is light for cappuccino. Food is delicious. We ordered
1. Lox bialy (open faces) – freshly prepared. it was yummy & pretty filling. I’d recommend sandwich & maybe order other bakery/cake if insufficient, unless you like bagel…
2. green goddess fritatta sandwich – yummy with crispy dialysis, cheese, fresh vegi & pumpkin and it was just nice for light eater.

we wanted to try babka but it was no more when arrived in the afternoon. next time will be early… . So, we ordered an apple coffee cake, which didn’t taste like apple & coffee cake, but i still enjoyed it as the addition of nuts, slight sugar & cinnamon on top made each bite another layer of light nutty flavor and crunchy texture.

When we arrived at Potchke at around noon time on a Tuesday afternoon, we could see that Chef Laurence Faber has quite a culinary following.
The outside was buzzing with happy lunch couples and the inside was getting quite crowded as well. I got in line, while my better half grabbed a seat along the windows. I like how airy and bright the inside of Potchke is, with many live plants lining the windows and a whole lot of retro vibes. There’s also a fireplace nook room where you can sit and enjoy your meal and read a book/work. Being a Ukrainian native, I wanted to try the borscht on my first visit. I loved the flavor and how Chef Faber added mushrooms to his version, but what bothered me was that the veggies were half raw!! I’ve tried many variations of borscht growing up as a child in Ukraine, and the grated veggies were always fully cooked. I ended up taking half home, and cooking it all the way through. I loved the pampushki (bread rolls) that the borscht came with so much and they reminded me of the ones back home. My cappuccino was absolutely heavenly, one of the best that I’ve had in Knoxville. I do want to come back to Potchke and try the matzo ball soup next time and also their famous babka. Will update my review when I return!

Yummy baked goods, limited options for dairy allergies. I ended up with an oat milk chai and a pastrami sandwich sans cheese. We came with a larger group and the server was very clearly annoyed with us and seemed even more annoyed when we tried to clarify items due to the above mentioned dairy allergy. It was quick service and got some yummy bites on pastries. Cool decor as well. Long lines, but it moves fast.

This is my first time eating food from a Michelin star restaurant and it completely lived up to the hype. I would have payed double. My wife and I could not think of a better sandwich we’ve had in our lives. The Babkas were amazing. The chai latte is perfect, sweet creamy not too spicy. The 5¢ seltzer was hilariously only five cents. The room is bright and cozy, about a 15min wait. It was a little tricky to find, as there’s no good sign on the road. But overall an exceptional

Absolute love this place, I recommend it to literally everyone I see and talk about it non stop. When i comes to European/ Jewish Bakery’s this is as good as it gets in Tennessee. I havent had anything on the menu that is not packed with unique flavor and freshness. Some of the best Lox I have ever had and also great coffee. My friends get sick of me because of how much I talk about this place. It is the first thing I recommend to people if they are new to knoxville. It’s got great food for everyone no matter how picky. I could really write a whole essay about how much I love this place and break down each dish I’ve tried but I do not want to waste any more of your time. If your in town and in search of some fresh, flavorful, soul replenishing food then you have to come here

Update: Went back for like the 5th time, got the pastrami egg and cheese sandwhich. Just blew me away again, best breakfast sandwhich ive had possibly ever. Light sauce tender pastrami, fluffy egg, light airy crispy bun. Beautiful

Fav dishes: Lox Bailey, Matzoh ball soup, Avo Tartine, Potato Blintz, Pastrami egg and cheese and honestly everything probably.

Oh wow! What a great spot. My sister in love took us here as our final food spot while visiting and I’m stuffed. I got the barmitvah show stopper and the hubs got the Reuben, which both were soooo soo good. Plus the weather was nice enough to sit outside and we could bring our dog to sit with us.

Amazing atmosphere and decor. Plenty of coffee options and great sandwiches. The open face lox on an everything bialy was absolutely delicious. If you’re in Knoxville, Tennessee it’s a must stop!

Absolutely outstanding. The food was excellent from start to finish, and the borscht soup was incredibly soul satisfying, rich, comforting, and full of flavor. There is a reason this place often has a wait, and it is 100 percent worth every minute and every dollar. A must visit spot in Knoxville.

What a gem we found! This place was a tad tricky to find but when you do finally find it, it’s exciting. As soon as you walk, you feel transported to the past in a way. Kind of retro feeling. Very cute vibe. The food was amazing! I forgot what the foods we ordered were called. It was bagel-like. I’m leaving photos so you can ask. The one with the lox… omg best lox bagel ever! I literally order this in all different places but never had one like this. And the other was I believe pastrami, egg, & cheese. So good!
