The service was good and the waitresses were friendly.
Although I didnt think the food was great, I would recommend for others to give it a try. Just know its reservation only and opened on Fri and Sats.
I was asked if we had a reservation and told the man at the bar that I had tried to make one prior to showing up. Instead of turning us away, we were seated right by the front door (and it was freezing outside.
Grateful to be accepted as guests, firmly in our seats, I started looking around. The restaurant is beautiful. I love how it is decorated. I did not like that our glasses were dirty. Food particles and film were stuck around the outside of each glass. Ew. The waitress noticed me looking at them and brought new ones over to switch them out, which was appreciated, but the new ones were even worse! I decided that I would just drink beer from the bottle instead.
We were informed of what they weren’t able to make that day and the special for the evening. We remembered their black bean soup being very delicious back in the day so we ordered that, with beef empanadas and croquetas.
The black bean soup arrives and we take bites of it. It wasn’t as good as it used to be, but still was enjoyable. The empanadas were extremely plain except the sauce they were served with was very good and provided much-needed flavor. I would never order these again.
The croquetas were absolutely diabolical. I think they were supposed to contain ham but if there was any it went unnoticed. The salsa they are served with is way too sweet. These things were DRY and not only were they dry, as they are chewed they form a paste in the mouth and are hard to swallow. Awful, awful, awful. And they give you a lot of them. I kept looking at the glass of water that I didn’t want to drink from, happy that I had water in the car.
So we order a main meal even though we knew we were full. I ordered La Cubanita and my husband ordered the Pan Con Lechon. The sandwiches arrive and we immediately take note of the side of black beans. I look at my husband and say, “That’s not what the soup was, right?” He takes a bite and says, “Yep, they’re the exact same thing.” So the soup we ordered was actually what they use for the sides when their website makes it seem like a standalone dish. That was disappointing.
The sandwiches were nothing great. My husband suspected his was made incorrectly because there was no mojo sauce to be found, just mustard. There was also this weird texture where the sandwich wanted to dry your mouth out but it stopped just shy of that happening. Sandwiches were nothing to write home about and in fact, I can make them better at home and have eaten better elsewhere.
Looking around the restaurant, we wondered why we needed a reservation as it was not busy at all. The service was extremely slow, too slow and inattentive for how many people there were. I ordered a corona and received a presidente, but that was fine so I didn’t correct her.
I hate to say this but I think things are going downhill here. The food quality was poor, lacked flavor, dirty glasses, mediocre service and I could go on. Unfortunately, this was our first (dine in) and last time eating here. I hope they continue to serve the community and make improvements as they go.
I started out with a mojito. It was tasty and the sugar cane was a nice touch.
I got the steak special (32) and my husband a pork dish (22) so we could share. The meat flavors were rich and complex. The rice and beans were much simpler.
It was a great meal and we will be back.
