Reviews
The chicken karaage batter wasn’t the most authentic, but it was still enjoyable. The kids loved the yakitori skewers. The chicken wasabi dish was decent, though I think it would have been even better using chicken thigh and a piece of seaweed to round out the flavours.
One piece of feedback I’d add is that the experience would have been even better if the background music suited the izakaya vibe — something other than Chinese New Year songs.
Overall, a solid izakaya experience in Penang, with some standout dishes that made the visit worthwhile.
Overall, i recommend this Restaurant.
This shop’s food is absolutely amazing, I swear to God! Out of all the Japanese places I’ve been to, this one stands out the most. The food is delicious, like seriously top-tier!
The staff here are super nice, patient, and friendly — especially the one with white hair :3
So yeah… I EXTREMELY, HIGHLY recommend you eat here, whether you’re a tourist or just someone being dragged to Penang for the hundredth time like me..
So!
Enjoy your meal here!
Charlotte — out!
We ordered a seafood sashimi bowl and an unagi don. After waiting almost an hour, the food arrived and it was honestly shocking.
The sashimi don looked nothing like the photos. The tuna was clearly from a poor cut — mushy, watery, and tasted not fresh at all, with visible ice crystals in several pieces. The uni was the worst part: it tasted bitter, mixed with ice shards and artificial yellow coloring. It was so bad that I had to rinse my mouth immediately.
The unagi don was a complete fail as well. Despite being advertised as “freshly grilled live eel,” it tasted exactly like a pre-packaged frozen product.
• The sauce was overly sweet to the point of bitterness
• The eel skin was tough and rubbery (hard to cut even with chopsticks)
• The rice was clumpy and soggy
• The egg layer was paper-thin
• A thick layer of cabbage was used as filler, with only a very thin slice of eel on top
This is NOT what freshly grilled unagi should be like — real unagi should have crispy skin and tender flesh.
To make things worse, a male waiter told us that seafood don “always takes one hour,” which felt dismissive and unprofessional. The service overall was careless and unfriendly, yet the restaurant still charges a 10% service fee despite providing almost no service. We also noticed clear discriminatory behavior — nearby tables speaking Cantonese were served tea, while we were only given plain water.
The environment itself is clean and nicely lit, suitable for a casual gathering, but the atmosphere feels cold and uninviting. Considering the food quality and service, the value is extremely poor — this is fast-food level at best.
This was by far the worst meal we had in Penang. The 4.8 rating on Google is highly questionable and feels artificially inflated.
Definitely not coming back, and honestly, this experience has left me wary of Japanese restaurants in Penang.
Avoid if you care about freshness and authenticity.
P.S. The music selection was vibrant and uplifting.
2. Sashimi are nice.
3.gilled pork slice, chicken skins and bollocks are nice.
To improve
1. Live band was abit loud. Slightly lower down the volume could be better.
2. Tamago was abit watery. It can be improved.
3. Fried garlic rice is abit soggy and hard. Make sure the overnight rice was properly cooked but not undercooked.
4. Grilled food portions like chicken meats was cut in slightly large pieces. One-bite-off size could be better.
