I recently visited Maggie’s Seafood Market – Fish & Chips Eatery in Nanaimo and was genuinely impressed — from the moment I walked in the friendly service set the tone, and the food more than delivered. The halibut (and cod) came in generous portions, fried to a golden crisp with a light, airy batter that let the fresh fish shine through.  The fries were hand-cut, perfectly hot and crisp, and the house made tartar sauce added just the right tang that only emphasizes that the focus here is on quality, not fluff. Gluten-free options are available if you ask.  A solid recommendation for anyone passing through Nanaimo craving top-notch fish & chips.

Quiet and quaint place. The owner, lovely lady was absolutely a delight and she shared some local attractions with us to check out during our vacation. We are from AB and we just relocated to the Island. We arrived in Nanaimo but heading to Parksville. Friendly and kind!
The food was extremely good, hot and perfect we had the Cod and it’s to die for! The crispy not greasy batter was cooked to perfection with glistening fish inside. The fries were delicious and hats off to the Caesar salad because it was surprisingly very tasty. The coleslaw was exactly what a great coleslaw is! Don’t change it! Your gravy though is thin and tastes packaged, you need to change that!

This is a small, street-food style fish and chip shop. My favorites are the oysters, halibut and chip, which are incredibly fresh and perfectly crispy. The portions are huge.

The fish is really great we got the cod, the chips are very average. We did take out and waited for 10 minutes for our food, my boyfriend wanted to taste it while its hot so we seated for like 2 minutes so he could have a bite and we can go on our way but the lady at the counter told us that we can’t stay as we did take out and had to pay extra to sit down. There’s no one sitting at the restaurant so thats weird, I never had any experience in my life treated like this , anyway just be sure to prepare to pay extra if your going to sit and eat here lol

What a gem of a find! We decided on the place as I found in on the “Find Me Gluten Free” app and it had some good reviews. My partner wanted some fish and chips but didn’t want me to miss out (gluten intolerance is great) so to the FMGF app I went and am I so glad I did. Maggie’s has GF indicated on their menu by the items they can do GF – plenty of choices to keep you happy! You can choose from a ton of different fish including Snapper, Haddock, Salmon, Ling Cod, Halibut, and Cod in addition to other items. The owner/server came over to let us know the GF would take a bit longer because it was separate from the other items and that was super nice (they have a dedicated GF fryer). When we got our items (GF Calamari, GF 2 Piece Snapper, Fish Cakes, and 2 Piece Haddock) we were very excited. The GF batter is visibly different from the regular batter (more yellow in colour) so you know it’s instantly not the same when it’s served (that was nice to see). The batter is super tasty and crispy and stays stuck to the fish for both regular and GF. The fries were the way I like them – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside – or as my partner put it “these are proper English chips!” The fish is fresh, the batter is tasty, and the fries were great. I’ll happily be coming back the next time I’m on the island.

Came by this place by accident and was absolutely delighted by how good the food was! The haddock fish and chips were fresh and delicious and the owner was friendly and welcoming. Best fish and chips I’ve had in Nanaimo!

Halibut & chips, calamari & chips & prawns and chips-ALL gluten free, super fresh and so much flavour and proper texture. Going to have dreams about these prawns!!! The nicest lady served us, made sure we were taken care of from start to finish.

Have had Maggie’s a few times sat in and take out. Meals have been great! Today we sat in and everything was very fresh and great portion sizes. Even with it being busy the lady at the front came by and checked to see how our meals were.

What a lucky find for us! We were in Nanaimo (from Alberta) to visit family and we just happened upon Maggie’s. The food was AMAZING! I wish we were staying long so I could try more of the menu. And the service! The sweet gal that was working there (also formerly from Alberta, coincidentally) was so wonderful and kind. She went way above and beyond, packing our leftovers on ice they were still cold when we got to our destination. I can’t wait to go back!

Amazing fish and chips place with gluten-free batter option cooked in a separate dedicated fryer! Menu options like crab cakes and deep-fried oysters and homemade sides that’ll knock your socks off. English style chips and two types of vinegar on every table. They won’t disappoint! An excellent stop if you’re driving through. Lucky you if you’re a local!
