Mango on Above Bar Street is a lively tapas bar in Southampton city centre. We specialise in Thai small plates, tropical cocktails and boutique wine. We offer an informal and fun drinks & dining experience, and are independent, family-owned and passionately run by a small close-knit team. Set in one of Southampton’s historic Tudor buildings, we’re footsteps from the 02 guildhall and a short walk from the Mayflower theatre, making us an ideal before or after spot for food and/or cocktails. Special offers include: Monday – Friday lunchtimes curry & a drink for £15, happy hour cocktails everyday ‘til 7pm and after 9.30pm, 4 tapas for the price of 3 everyday until 5 pm, and 20% off food after 9pm Thursday-Saturday.

Nice tapas the best one is the dumplings and others were nice but needed more zing. The wine selection was good but prices tend to be a bit steep after the cheapest bottle. The curry was nice with fresh ingredients but not the hottest thing for two chilis. Flavours were very nice and the coconut rice had coconut flakes on top. Not clear that it was separate so it could be good for it to be a shared rice to avoid spending a lot on rice. Cocktails were tasty but not very strong. Overall amazing service and very cosy atmosphere.

The food was delicious – my mum and I had the 4 for 3 Tapas at lunch time. It was delicious – our favourite was the veggie spring rolls. Jack was very attentive, and personable. We will be back!!! Thanks, Mango!

The service here is excellent, and the staff are always willing to give their customers tips on the best Thai food to eat. We had a selection of tapas, along with a golden Thai chicken curry. The best dishes, by far, were the Golden curry and prawn drunken noodles. The curry tasted like it was made from scratch and was full of subtle spices. The noodles, too, were beautifully spiced and made a great accompliment to virtually all of the main dishes. One slight letdown was the Thai pork salad; the meat was quite dry and really chewy. We had eaten this here before previously and the pork had been tender and moist. Another not so great dish was the sweet and sour pork skewers. These were overcooked and somewhat burnt.
The chicken satay sauce was delightful, although somewhat disappointingly, the meatballs were no more than ok, lacking any real depth in Asian flavours.
Being a bit picky, the restaurant is very hot during the summer months, with only a free standing fan and no air-conditioning. That said, overall, this was a really nice place to eat Thai food and I am looking forward to returning here soon.
Update: we went back to Mango today and a big shout out to Beth, who also looked after us last time. She not only remembered our drinks order from several weeks ago, but she also recalled that our Thai pork salad wasn’t great. This time she was sure that it would be so much better, and in fact it was excellent, as were our other dishes.
Because of Beth’s excellent service and fabulous meals this time, I have upgraded my rating of Mango Thai Tapas from 4 stars to 5 stars.

Absolutely lovely restaurant- couldn’t recommend more. We ended up being half an hour late for our reservation (we called up to let them know) as as well as keeping our table for us, they checked how long we had ahead of the theatre and made sure to serve us promptly and help us fit in a delicious meal into the time we had. Every staff member we met was super friendly and made us feel extremely welcome.
And the food was really good – I’m just sorry I didn’t take any photos, because it looked great, but we were all too busy inhaling it. The squid was a big favourite, as were the mango corn cakes. Portions are generous too – we had 7 tapas dishes and two curries between 4 and had left overs. Also they are really good for gluten free options – we were able to get quite a few things, more than we were expecting!

Absolutely top notch customer service from the first moment we walked through the door!! Food presented and tasted amazing as always! Table service by Fran was exceptional! Chefs outstanding. We’ll definitely be back. Excellent recommendation by Fran for local gig entertainment also!

It all started well with the friendly hostess seating us at a great spot, followed by bringing out yum prawn crackers for us to munch on while we decided on what to eat and drink. The drinks too were lovely and perfect for the warm weather (we had the lychee juice, mango juice and elderflower & cucumber soda). But once the tapas started to come out, we noticed that the food was dry and overcooked. The steamed dumplings weren’t juicy at all and even the chicken skewers felt like stale frozen chicken. We kept our fingers crossed for the mains but were sadly disappointed by dry chewy pork belly stir fry that literally made our jaws hurt and a Golden chicken curry that was sub par at best. I’d defo recommend this place for the ambience, the friendly staff and delicious drinks but the food isn’t worth it – was even more disappointing as we’d read such good reviews online and made a decision to go enjoy a good meal at the place.

Had a wonderful meal here before the theatre, just a 5 min walk away from Mayflower which is super convenient. Food was absolutely amazing, so tasty and really good portions and a wide selection of vegan and dairy free options which was great to see and took a lot of anxiety out of eating out as one of my party has an allergy. We were served by Tyler who was just the best, couldn’t do enough for us, super attentive and there the moment you needed something, literally just a glance in his direction and he was there to get us whatever we needed. A lovely start to our evening out and would definitely eat here again

My partner and I went to Mango Thai Tapas for the first time today. It’s a hidden gem. The decor is very nice. We went in the early afternoon. It was very calm, even with a fair amount of people present.
The food was delicious. I recommend the tapas range. There are very nice options for vegetarians. I enjoyed the corn fritters in particular and my partner loved the satay chicken. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. Everything was presented beautifully and full of flavour.
We were served by Jack, who seemed to be on his own. He was very friendly, cheerful and attentive. We commented on how organised he seemed to be, because everyone surrounding us had what they needed and he was always checking in with everyone.
A lovely place that we would be happy to recommend to anyone.

We popped in on Friday in the hope of finding a table for dinner. We were promptly sat down and Jack was our server for the evening. He was super friendly and made helpful recommendations. The egg fried rice that he suggested was great!

A group of ten of us visited for the bottomless brunch option and it was such a great choice. Being a two hour sitting already makes this excellent bang for your buck – add to that the wide variety of drinks and the speedy service, you really are on to a winner.
The food was great and, again, offered a decent variety, and the staff were so friendly and attentive – I couldn’t fault them.
