NoLita branch of mini chain of cafes serving couscous and other French-Moroccan standards.

Café Gitane in SoHo is a charming spot that blends French and Moroccan flavors in a unique and cozy setting. It has that neighborhood feel, tucked away but very much a local favorite. The service is warm and attentive, which adds to the overall experience.
We tried the Chicken Parmesan sandwich, which was excellent — flavorful, hearty, and well balanced. The hamburger was just okay, not bad but nothing particularly special compared to other options in the area.
The atmosphere is quite lively and on the louder side, with the space itself being relatively small, so don’t expect a quiet or spacious dining experience. That said, it’s part of the charm: it feels authentic, bustling, and very local.
Overall, Café Gitane is a great stop if you’re in SoHo and looking for a casual place with character, good service, and tasty food that mixes French bistro classics with Moroccan touches.

Had a nice meal at Cafe Gitane. I tried the baked eggs with tomato, which had a pleasant, light taste and were really good. My friend ordered the couscous and enjoyed that as well. Overall, a positive experience!

I had a terrible experience here. It was honestly some of the worst service I’ve ever received. The staff were extremely rude, and the servers kept hovering as if they wanted us to leave. We were rushed so much that I didn’t even feel comfortable ordering anything beyond a drink. The whole vibe was off. My friends and I left feeling disappointed and pushed out, and we had only come for coffee and breakfast. I would not recommend this place.

Stumbled upon this place and had breakfast. Very cool old school restaurant. Service was great and most of our food was amazing. Baked feta was pungent in the best way. Hummus was light and tasty. Overall we loved what we had to eat only dish that wasn’t a hit was the meatballs and rice, it was very under seasoned. All else was great and we will definitely return.

The place is old style. Good tables and good atmosphere
The coffee isn’t the best but I think that the place and history makes it a place you wanna be and visit again.
You can not bring your laptop here and that is so cool.
The only downside is that you leave smelling like fried food and smoke.

Once upon a time, Café Gitane epitomized a certain Parisian-inflected downtown charm—half-earnest, half-ironic—a kind of insouciant chic that made it feel like more than just a spot for avocado toast (before that became a punchline). But time is cruel to institutions that mistake their own mythology for immunity.
The NoHo outpost, in particular, seems to have become a caricature of itself. What was once casual has curdled into careless. The waitstaff, perhaps lulled by the café’s reputation or simply disillusioned by its stagnation, now appear more interested in maintaining their own social ecosystem than in extending hospitality. Orders feel like interruptions. Requests are met with a sort of theatrical impatience. You almost want to apologize for your presence.
And yet, hope flickers. The relocation of the original Jane Hotel location to Vinegar Hill suggests that somewhere, someone still cares. The vibe there recalls what Café Gitane used to be—sunlit, slightly scruffy, a touch of irreverence without indifference. It’s a reminder that atmosphere, when curated with intention rather than assumption, can still matter.
But until that ethos is rekindled across the board, Café Gitane risks becoming a cautionary tale of New York dining: a place trading not on quality, but on a faded sense of cool

It WAS a classic NoLita fave. Excellent coffee. Great vibes, typically a cool international crowd. Solid food. My issue is the service has become very overbearing perhaps in their effort to turn tables over. Arrogant servers hound you to order quickly and clear your plate before you finish chewing your last bite. Could be a little more relaxed here. If they improved their service I’d dine her a lot more.

Great small French restaurant worth the stop for unique food. Service was fast friendly and helpful, wine was excellent. Had the spicy meatballs which had good flavor but were not spicy. The breakfast sandwich was outstanding and highly recommended. Overall great place to grab lunch.

The classic brunch spot that introduced me to avocado toast! I have attempted to replicate the toast on my own, but it is a standout in how they make the avocado. I’ve been going to this place as a visitor and now as a permanent resident. It’s located in a picturesque area in Nolita. After brunching here, you can roam around the area & people watch at the Elizabeth garden. My go to dish is avocado toast & the cous cous with the side of sausage. The cous cous can be shared with your dining partner. Today my dining partner suggested to share the blossom waffle and oh my, delicious! The meatballs is another shareable dish that is outstanding. I normally order a mocha latte & get excited for the paw art. This time around, none. I was a bit disappointed to not have the paw art & the chocolate that accompanies it; but I still enjoyed the meal regardless.

It’s a nice buzzing atmosphere place. The food looks good and it’s good – ok for the taste. However i felt like food looks better than it tastes. It’s a little bit bland – I missed richness in flavour and more attention to detail.
Also for having a good conversation the music is too loud.
So overall – a good, consistent place but Not 5 stars amazing.
Pros:
Stylish
Buzzy
Good location
Cons:
Too loud
Food looks better than tastes
