Downstairs of the restaurant was lively, upstairs was brighter and more laid back. Tried the burrata, charcuterie, brussels sprouts, steak frites and duck . Proteins were the standouts in my opinion! Cool mix of Mediterranean and French small plates. Service was also great! Said they were out of brussels sprouts when we originally ordered them – but our server came back and said they could make them for us. Much appreciated!
Heard great things about brunch and happy hour, so I’ll return and give those a try. Overall an unpretentious, laid back spot with awesome food.
The Tuesday special is a deal: two entrees an appetizer and a dessert for 65$.
So what did we get?
The French onion soup was only decent. It was a bit on the sweet side and I didn’t care for it really, sort of disappointing.
The burrata salad: fresh mozzarella and fresh greens but nothing spectacular.
I was initially served the wrong steak dish: the steak frites. The fries were just unacceptable, they tasted like they came out of the freezer. And the steak was way too tough and stringy. The lemon garlic aioli was also disappointing.
However, I was able to quickly get this replaced with the menu item I actually wanted: the steak au poivre, which was delicious and by far the best item on the menu. The filet was tender and mashed potato tasted homemade. So I can’t really complain about not getting what I ordered. My partner opted for the crab spaghetti and said it was perfectly decent, but again, nothing spectacular. For dessert the crème brûlée was…. perfectly decent, nothing special, a little on the small side and tasted a bit generic.
Ultimately, this is not my first pick for authentic French cuisine in Chicago. While it’s not overpriced and the food for the most part gets the job done, it fails to impress in any significant way and needs further refinement. But if you’re in the area and need a sufficiently middle brow dining experience this certainly isn’t the worst you could do.
Just a little note: if you order pickup to enjoy at the park or elsewhere, make sure to bring your own napkins and utensils since they weren’t included in my bag. Also, when ordering scrambled eggs, you might receive sunny side up instead — but still tasty
An Exceptional Dining Experience with a Personal Touch
La Sud Mediterranean Kitchen is an absolute gem — a perfect blend of warmth, refinement, and culinary artistry. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance captures the charm of a European café — cozy lighting, tasteful décor, and a welcoming energy that immediately makes you feel special.
The food struck that perfect balance of comforting and elevated. Nothing felt rushed or phoned in, even with our group size. Service was warm, attentive, and genuinely accommodating, which makes such a difference when you’re dining with a crowd.
The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, the kind of place that makes you want to linger over another glass of wine and order “just one more thing.”
An easy neighborhood favorite and absolutely worth returning to whether for a special night out or a casual dinner with friends.
Atmosphere was really nice. Inside and outside seating.
The coffee is delicious!
