Okay, I normally hate writing bad reviews BUT.

The 2 stars it gets is from the two hosts who greeted me at the door, they were nice

1st off the majority of people in there worked there, just to set the scene.

I place a to go order and sat at the bar to wait on my food. Ordered the local chicken with cornbread and kale salad.

The bartender completely ignored me and spoke 20 mins later while I still waited on my food. Didn’t offer me a drink or water while I wanted 30 mins on my food.

The atmosphere was stuffy. Someone brought my food out an sat it in the booth beside the door. I had to ask if that was my food before they actually gave it to me.

The food was ok, small plate for $30, chicken was dry, kale was ok, the cornbread was probably the best thing on the plate.

But overall outside of the hosts at the door, the service was very poor. I didn’t feel welcomed at all.

I am from out of town so I’m not used to this type of service and I have eaten at many places in CVille while here for work and this is the worst.

Really great food and even better service. The staff was very friendly and gave us a dessert on the house since it was our first time! We chose the chocolate torte and it was spectacular. Highly recommend the mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and pimento cheese bites. Would definitely recommend to come here if you are wanting stellar service.

Delicious dinner in Charlottesville. We all enjoyed our dishes. I had the fried oysters with Brussels and fingerling potatoes and a Mule in the Forrest drink. It was all delicious.

After working a grueling shift at the hospital, I came home to an empty fridge. I called around a few places to get food to no avail, until I remembered seeing the thanksgiving to go sign. Even though they were sold out and already closed, the gentleman put together a meal for me and waited so I could come pick it up. He didn’t even charge for it! That’s the type of community this place stands for. Signed a very grateful nurse.

Dinner at Maya Southern Restaurant was nothing short of delightful, and a huge part of that experience was thanks to our server, Bri. From the moment we sat down, she radiated warmth—bubbly, cheerful, and genuinely excited to share the menu highlights. You could tell she enjoyed her job, and that kind of positive energy is contagious. It made us feel taken care of in a way that elevated the entire meal.

We started with the pork belly, and wow—what a decadent bite. Each morsel was beautifully caramelized, coated in a sticky-sweet glaze that clung lovingly to the crisped edges. It melted away on the tongue with a perfect balance of richness and sweetness, without ever feeling greasy or heavy.

The pork chop was equally impressive. Thick-cut and grilled to a juicy, blush-pink center, it was topped with a glaze that had just the right balance of savory and slightly smoky-sweet. The accompanying Brussels sprouts were roasted to a golden crisp on the outside, with a tender bite inside—so good they could convert even the most stubborn vegetable skeptic (me).

The chicken breast might sound simple, but don’t underestimate it here. It came out perfectly seared, locking in all the juices, with a subtle salt crust that made each bite sing. It wasn’t overdone or bland like so many chicken dishes out there. Instead, it was seasoned with confidence, served tender and moist, and every bite reminded me of how satisfying a well-cooked piece of poultry can be.

From the service to the execution of each dish, Maya Southern nails the art of comforting, elevated Southern cuisine. We left full, happy, and already planning our return.

Always come back to Maya for the incredible cocktails. The food is excellent too, and we really enjoy the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. If you’re looking for a place that is lively but still fairly low volume where you can chat easily this is the place to go. The bar is great and they have a big TV you can watch sports on if you like. Parking is easy enough with street parking if available and plenty of parking across the street in the train station parking lot. That parking is paid but the rates are not unreasonable.

Initially, I thought this was a Mexican restaurant based on the name. It is not. Next…if you are here in a Friday or Saturday, ask to sit it Joyce’s section. She is the most energetic server I’ve ever experienced. She is friendly, funny, and she felt like a friend I haven’t seen in years. She made an already great day even better. Upon being seated, she suggested the pimento cheese appetizer, which was fried yumminess. We also had the fried green tomatoes, which had a really good crunch and the sauce that came with it was great. I wasn’t sure what wine to get so Joyce brought me a sample of two really great wines. We each got the strip steak…it was very good, well seasoned and the right amount of char for a grilled steak. The char and seasoning worked well to flavor the steak. I also had the whipped potatoes and collards. The cornbread was also very good, it was actually cornbread, without a pound of sugar. I would recommend this!

Great food and great service, overall such a nice place to have a cute date night dinner. The chicken was definitely some of the best chicken I’ve had in a long time and the potatoes & mac&cheese were an amazing combination with the chicken. Definitely will be coming back soon!

Everything was full of flavor and delicious. Sauce that came on the steak was dream worthy. So so good! The pork chop was cooked properly and was tender and juicy. The sides were spot on, green beans had an excellent crunch. Definitely worth trying! We had an excellent and sweet waitress, Joyce. Overall, a fabulous experience.

Excellent.

I personally believe that very few restaurants/chefs know how to and cook great Risottos. General speaking, when they put on the menu is because they know the risks and the prizes.

Amazing Mushroom Risotto.

As matter of fact, entire experience was great!

Looking forward to inventing another stop in C’ville to visit new Maya Friends!
