The tavern scene in the city of Milwaukee is amazing. There seems to be a hidden gem on every other corner. Phylo’s, hiding on a corner in West Allis, is a wonderful vestige of a time of warmth and welcome. Within ten minutes, we were talking with everyone in the bar. The maestro of this symphony is the indomitable Lou, the owner and master of the grill. She cooked up one of the best burgers I have tasted, with a choice of cheese, onions, tomato, lettuce, pickles and whatever else you want. Lou is there to please. She is also the consummate master of ceremonies and makes Phylo’s a special place.

As others have said, homey/divey vibe, nothing fancy but perfect for what it is. Feels like it’s always been there. Great food too, friendly owner/bartender, an an excellent brandy old fashioned.
If you don’t love this place, I think it says more about you than it does about Phylos!

Lou is funny, charming, and wonderful. The burgers were delicious, and enormous. The drinks are very reasonably priced, it’s a great little, tiny, casual, local bar.
It was HOT out and there was a nice breeze flowing through, but if you are heat sensitive like me, you want to make sure to dress in cool, comfy clothing,or go on a cooler day.

What great hospitality! We stopped in on a Sunday night during the Packer game. We intended on ordering food, but enjoyed the FREE homemade potato soup they offered instead. They also had complimentary snacks and a taco bar. Lou made many jokes and her daughter’s dogs were the sweetest. If you want to feel like you are hanging out at a *fun* family gathering, stop here for a few. If you haven’t been, you need to be.
