Starting with the good: the service is great. The waiters are friendly. And the restaurant is charming and homey.
The French toast was a catastrophic failure. Something was off with the taste. Bitter and sour. The middle of the bread was soggy. This was a French toast of nightmares. The bacon was okay but couldn’t save the French toast.
I refuse to believe that the other items on their menu can’t be this bad. But I would definitely not recommend that French toast – which I spent about $20 on.
To get started on my review, I’ll be begin with the staff/service. Kindest people I’ve ever met – my server even offered to donate her kidney to my dying uncle. Always refilled my coffee without missing a beat. She explained the menu well and provided clarification on our hopes to eat a “Big Boy Breakfast”. She deserves a raise.
Secondly, the food was outstanding. Pricey, sure, but that’s what you have to pay for quality ingredients. I got the Mexican Omelette (gracias!), which came with toast and potatoes. I mean, wow.
The locale is clean and well kept.
The man sitting next to me ordered eggs and raw tomatoes. So New York.
I felt like I was home.
I Will Be Back and I will bring all my family, friends, and future generations to dine at Westside Restaurant. Thank you.
This isn’t your average diner…which is to say, you get what you pay for. I’ve eaten at virtually every diner in the UWS, and this is my favorite spot.
West side is an experience unparalleled by any other diner in New York City. From the warm welcome upon arrival, to the consistent refills of Joe, to the check being served in a timely fashion, this is NOT a destination you want to miss out on.
Now, I bet you’re wondering how I got here. Well, I’ll tell you. I found myself gripping the tough reality of sickness via a hangover following a drunken stupor from the night previously. Upon being yanked from my restless slumber, I thought to myself, “wow, I need some eggs and I need them now.” Then it hit me. West Side Diner.
10/10. The staff could not have been more lovely and the eggs were made with precision and rapidity to quench my bodily famine. Pricey, sure. But a small price to pay for salvation. I will return, and if you’re reading this, I hope you’ll join me. Maybe even share a slice of pie and a good conversation.
