The lamb was good, chicken is overcooked, kebab tastes no different from street food, and the sauces were rich and varied. Overall I trusted the local reviews and it is good, however, the waiter misled us into ordering a huge platter. None of the other six-person tables ordered like that. We are two Asians and clearly didn’t know the portion sizes. He took the menu and practically guided us step by step toward that choice. We genuinely felt a strong sense of bad intention.

Honestly, I’m speechless.
Is it really necessary to treat foreigners this way every time? If you want tips we could’ve given you but with this?
Isn’t wasting food something to be ashamed of?
Is this how recommendations are supposed to be made?

The waiter’s recommendation ruined what should have been a very good experience for us.

After a long day of exploring museums and the pyramids, we were exhausted and badly craving good food. Our only request to the driver was authentic Egyptian cuisine, and his response was simply, “Say no more.” He brought us here, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The place was busy yet well maintained, which already set the tone. We ordered traditional dishes and every bite was outstanding. The starter lime juice was refreshing, the main course was excellent, especially the molokhia, and the tarb was unforgettable. Honestly, I kept looking for the same flavors afterward but couldn’t find anything close, not even in Alexandria.

Sobhy Kaber is one of Cairo’s most famous traditional Egyptian restaurants, known for its authentic grilled meats and classic home-style dishes. It is especially popular among locals and visitors looking for a genuine Egyptian dining experience.

The restaurant was founded in the mid-1990s by Sobhy Kaber, originally as a small local eatery in the Shubra area of Cairo. The founder’s goal was simple:
to serve traditional Egyptian food with generous portions, strong flavors, and consistent quality, similar to what families eat at home.

Through word of mouth, not advertising, the restaurant grew rapidly in popularity. What started as a modest neighborhood grill eventually became a Cairo food landmark, attracting customers from all parts of the city.

One of its biggest attractions is the generous serving size, which helped build a loyal customer base. It became widely known as a place where “Cairo locals eat,” which made it especially appealing to tourists seeking non-touristy food.

In recent years, the restaurant gained additional attention due to public discussions around its ownership and financial disputes, which kept the name in the spotlight.

The food was really tasty and hardy, the portions were great, the prices were reasonable and overall a solid Egyptian cuisine’s experience.

Very nice food and desserts.
Service was slow. Waiters were nice but too busy and problem understanding English. Noisy atmosphere.

Sobhi Kaber offers an authentic taste of Egyptian cuisine. It’s the perfect place to experience traditional local dishes that might sound unusual at first but are absolutely worth trying.

My top three recommendations are the Molokhia, Mombar, and Hamam Mahshi (Stuffed Pigeons) — each bursting with rich flavor and cooked to perfection. I wasn’t a big fan of the Hawawshi, but that’s just a matter of personal taste.

The service is excellent; the staff are exceptionally friendly and attentive, which makes the whole dining experience even better.

Overall, a great experience that I would definitely recommend for first time Cairo visitors.

Food was good but man the quantity is humongous. As per our standard one platter will easily serve 10 person and this includes rice and all meat. The service person who attended us was very kind.

Came here twice. The first night was excellent! Second time was during lunch, everything felt like it was not fresh like leftover from the night before loll. The waiter took our order wrong, etc.

I like the place in general but if you can choose, come at night maybe?

Nice authentic Egyptian food!
We had one of the restaurant team members explain the menu and give your recommendation in English. Very warm & hospitable staff, we didn’t have any challenge ordering.

A word of advice: The quantity is quite generous & the food is on the heavier side.
