Incredibly friendly, attentive service. Very well decorated. Dim.
Large servings–lacked flavor.
Better to order dishes with ginger, garlic, herbs.

If you ever find yourself wandering through the historic district of Folsom, make sure you treat yourself to a meal at Hop Sing Palace – you won’t regret it. This cozy little gem might be small in size, but it’s overflowing with flavor, charm, and warmth. From the moment we walked in, we knew we’d stumbled onto something special.

Let’s start with the service – it was incredibly fast and efficient, almost as if they knew we were coming. We barely had time to settle in before our drinks were on the table and our orders were being taken with genuine kindness and attention. The staff was thoughtful and accommodating, and when we mentioned we had someone with an egg allergy, they didn’t miss a beat. They happily prepared the fried rice without egg, which was a small detail that made a huge difference for us.

Now, the food – oh my goodness, the food. I’ve had American-Chinese cuisine in plenty of places, but Hop Sing Palace delivers something truly extraordinary. Every dish was bursting with flavor, perfectly balanced, and not too heavy or greasy like you sometimes find elsewhere. The portions were generous, and every bite felt like a celebration of fresh ingredients and authentic preparation. I found myself wishing I could try everything on the menu – and trust me, I’ll be back to give it a go.

But the experience didn’t end with the meal. Even the little details stood out – like the quirky and fascinating wallpaper in the bathroom, which added a playful, vintage charm to the space. It’s those kinds of touches that show just how much personality and care has gone into creating this place.

When we finally left, we were completely content and wonderfully well-fed, already talking about our next visit. Hop Sing Palace isn’t just a restaurant – it’s an experience, a slice of history wrapped in incredible flavors and heartfelt hospitality.

If you’re ever in Folsom, do yourself a favor and stop by Hop Sing Palace. Whether you’re craving something familiar or looking to discover new favorites, this place delivers in every way. Highly, highly recommended!

Nothing negative about this place. The busy events in the Old Downtown Folsom sometimes make parking a little difficult but it is always worth it.
The dishes are generous and super delicious. The servers are always spot on. The decor makes you feel like you’re in an old time bistro or tearoom.
Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

A cute, if a little dated, Chinese restaurant on the main drag of Folsom’s downtown. Fast service, good food, nice-size portions, reasonably priced. All in all, a solid 4 out of 5 across the board. We had the lo mein, wor won ton soup and the hop sing beef, and enjoyed them. A family friendly place.

Dined with my co-worker before a play. Was an interesting decor and environment.
Definitely a family style dinner and since it was just 2 of us, it was too much.

I ordered veggies, but was not prepared for how much it was. It was also a bit plain, like very little salt or seasoning. We both also ordered individual rice orders and they brought it on 1 plate. Just A LOT of food.

Don’t think I would go back unless I bring a large group.

I joined friends at Folsom’s Historic District as a farewell event to a friend going back to Japan.

We went to one of our usual haunts from the past, Hop Sing, a venerable local restaurant. Perhaps one of the reasons why I like it is because of its name, which reminds me of “Hop Sing,” the irascible cook and general factotum on the iconic television series Bonanza.

But it’s beyond that as the exterior is thematically on-point and once you go through its doors, it is like traveling to the Orient instantly without needing a passport nor the jet lag.

The food is decent, but one of the things that struck me was how overly reasonable their prices are, especially their specials and there’s a bunch of them. Stingy isn’t something you’d equate with their servings.

I’ve been to this place over the decades and it has proven to be timeless, where the past and present co-exist and the kind of place that you wish would never go away if only for personal nostalgia.

And there’s a good chance it has staying power for posterity. After all, it opened in 1957 and if you’re curios, Bonanza premiered in 1959.

How’s that for food for thought?

The food was excellent! Great service and the food came fast. The interior is dated, but I came for a good meal, not the decor. Things to note: homemade pot stickers and egg rolls! Delicious! Large quantity of food with the combo meals. I’d definitely go back!

We were 3 hungry people at lunch time on an incredibly busy day in Old Folsom (Dec. 7 craft fair) Told it would be a 15 min wait, but it was less than 10 minutes. There was no annoying background music so the place was pretty quiet & relaxing. Shockingly large appetizer portion. I have never seen egg rolls that were like logs sliced into sections for sharing! The staff was extremely attentive & the food came super quick. I was disappointed that they did not offer chopsticks & did not have Jasmine green tea. The lemon chicken gets mixed reviews as the person who got it liked it alot ,(especially the mild flavor) but another person in our group did not like that the chicken was sliced breaded chicken (patties?) instead of batter dipped chicken. The tempura shrimp was batter dipped which was ok, but was not light & crispy as we were expecting. The fried green beans were a massive pile of tangled uncut batter fried green beans which the batter/coating hadn’t really stuck well to. It was really hard to eat without the batter falling completely off. We would have preferred much less green beans that were individually battered & fried. We did discover some batter fried carrots (within the nest of green beans) & they were delightful! The table was too small for 3 people & our many platters of food. Not sure how that could be fixed.(the table was really too small for a lazy susan turntable in the center) The staff was amazing though & noticed when a plate was ready to be removed. We had alot of leftover food & were given containers & bags to take things home. We were even asked if we wanted the leftover sweet & sour sauce to take home & they put it in a tub for us! We haven’t eaten a great deal of Chinese food in our lives, so what we like & what we expect is our preferences only. Though some of the food was not our “favorite” , it was still a really good experience. Not many places have such impressive service, staff, portions & reasonable prices. We’ll definitely return.

Great atmosphere and extremely attentive, friendly service. The two soups we ordered were great (hot and sour) and (chicken wonton) both had a great flavor. However, the other plates we ordered were lacking any type of flavor/ seasoning (chicken soft noodle chow mein, shrimp fried rice and sizzling chicken).
