Large servings–lacked flavor.
Better to order dishes with ginger, garlic, herbs.
(Monday 2:00 PM seating)
Let’s start with the service – it was incredibly fast and efficient, almost as if they knew we were coming. We barely had time to settle in before our drinks were on the table and our orders were being taken with genuine kindness and attention. The staff was thoughtful and accommodating, and when we mentioned we had someone with an egg allergy, they didn’t miss a beat. They happily prepared the fried rice without egg, which was a small detail that made a huge difference for us.
Now, the food – oh my goodness, the food. I’ve had American-Chinese cuisine in plenty of places, but Hop Sing Palace delivers something truly extraordinary. Every dish was bursting with flavor, perfectly balanced, and not too heavy or greasy like you sometimes find elsewhere. The portions were generous, and every bite felt like a celebration of fresh ingredients and authentic preparation. I found myself wishing I could try everything on the menu – and trust me, I’ll be back to give it a go.
But the experience didn’t end with the meal. Even the little details stood out – like the quirky and fascinating wallpaper in the bathroom, which added a playful, vintage charm to the space. It’s those kinds of touches that show just how much personality and care has gone into creating this place.
When we finally left, we were completely content and wonderfully well-fed, already talking about our next visit. Hop Sing Palace isn’t just a restaurant – it’s an experience, a slice of history wrapped in incredible flavors and heartfelt hospitality.
If you’re ever in Folsom, do yourself a favor and stop by Hop Sing Palace. Whether you’re craving something familiar or looking to discover new favorites, this place delivers in every way. Highly, highly recommended!
The dishes are generous and super delicious. The servers are always spot on. The decor makes you feel like you’re in an old time bistro or tearoom.
Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
Definitely a family style dinner and since it was just 2 of us, it was too much.
I ordered veggies, but was not prepared for how much it was. It was also a bit plain, like very little salt or seasoning. We both also ordered individual rice orders and they brought it on 1 plate. Just A LOT of food.
Don’t think I would go back unless I bring a large group.
We went to one of our usual haunts from the past, Hop Sing, a venerable local restaurant. Perhaps one of the reasons why I like it is because of its name, which reminds me of “Hop Sing,” the irascible cook and general factotum on the iconic television series Bonanza.
But it’s beyond that as the exterior is thematically on-point and once you go through its doors, it is like traveling to the Orient instantly without needing a passport nor the jet lag.
The food is decent, but one of the things that struck me was how overly reasonable their prices are, especially their specials and there’s a bunch of them. Stingy isn’t something you’d equate with their servings.
I’ve been to this place over the decades and it has proven to be timeless, where the past and present co-exist and the kind of place that you wish would never go away if only for personal nostalgia.
And there’s a good chance it has staying power for posterity. After all, it opened in 1957 and if you’re curios, Bonanza premiered in 1959.
How’s that for food for thought?
