We rolled in with a group of six and ordered a spread to share:
• Apps: queso, fried pickles, pork belly burnt ends, cheese fries (kids favorite)
• Mains:
ribeye 3.5,
brisket 1,
smoked sausage 1,
barbecue 3,
chicken 2
• Sides: mac & cheese 2 , mashed potatoes 4
• Dessert: banana pudding 3
Atmosphere is awesome upstairs, staff was super friendly, and prices are fair.
Food-wise… the meats were the weak link: dry brisket, ok chicken, bland sausage, and the ribeye wasn’t anything special. The fried pickles were good but crazy salty. The sides, though — mac & cheese and mashed potatoes — were honestly the best part of the meal.
Overall we’d give the food 3 stars. Great place to hang out and drink, but if you’re coming just for top-tier barbecue, temper your expectations. The sides and vibe are the real winners here.”
The salad bar was fresh and had a great selection of veggies. The food on the bar was good as well. I noticed that the cornbread was tasty but must have been sitting for a while. I’m not sure why most of the patrons weren’t at the bar grabbing more bbq but I sure did enjoy it.
My server, Daphne was amazing and took very good care of me. Everyone I interacted with was pleasant and accommodating.
The overall experience was great but I will have to visit in the daytime because I hear the views are amazing.
Low & Slow has one of the most unique BBQ locations I’ve been to — inside the Johnston County airport, with outdoor seating that lets you watch private planes land and take off. It’s a great atmosphere, especially if you like aviation.
But once the food and service came into play, the experience unfortunately went downhill. I ordered a chopped brisket sandwich (no fat), and what I got was just okay — maybe a 3 out of 5. The sauce didn’t stand out, and the tea wasn’t anything to write home about.
The place was fairly busy, but not so packed that it excused the lack of basic service. Our waitress never smiled, barely said a word, and never checked on us — until we were basically done and ready for the check. Even then, it was just a quick, obligatory “everything okay?” with no eye contact or follow-up. I had to go to the bar for a tea refill before she finally brought one over, without saying one word.
Also, prices are on the higher end considering the food is average and the service is subpar. For what they charge, you expect a better all-around experience.
It’s worth a visit just for the novelty of the location, but don’t expect much beyond the view.
Atmosphere and Service 4.8/10 – The three-level setup with views of the airstrip makes this place stand out. Clean bathrooms, indoor and outdoor seating, and a neat location concept. Service was okay, though inflexible on seating changes. Still, the overall vibe was positive and memorable.
Buffet: 5.9/10 – A fair selection of BBQ staples. The homemade-style mac and cheese was a standout, rich and cheesy. The hamburger steak and hush puppies were flavorful, and the pulled pork was moist and well-prepared. BBQ sauce on the side was solid. However, the ribs lacked flavor and brisket wasn’t included unless paid extra. More variety or unique offerings would elevate the spread.
Aside from it tasting like pork, looking like pork, and smelling like pork, it was pulled like pork and not sliced or even chopped; as every brisket I’ve ever had has been.
I just don’t like being blatantly lied to; especially for a $16 baked potato. Potato was baked well, but overall meh.
Aside from the buffet, the menu has some offerings that are worth trying like the adult grilled cheese that features their delicious brisket. It was flavorful, tender and moist.
The atmosphere is great! Their outside dining gives you a great view of the airplanes flying in and out of the airport. It’s a great spot for kids and the young at heart.
