Food: I got the hog platter. It looked like pressed meat from a can and had very little flavor. Service: The guy that ‘Took my order’ just stood there waiting for me to speak. He never indicated he was ready for me to order. Atmosphere: LOL, its a gas station. It had gas station atmosphere. Overall, what quality of food, service and atmosphere would one expect from a gas station. The hush puppies were pretty good.

Great place.

So glad I stopped.

I had this place tagged as a #wanttogo on Google Maps. Photos looked great; reviews were good. I never really tried to go because it was a bit south of me. When I checked my location in Pungo, it was north of me.

Nice people, cheerful service–everybody says that. Yet in Malbon, the staff knows that you’ve never been here, and you are woefully unprepared for the Blessing of the Flavor Goddess that you were about to experience.

Go to “order here” and place the order. Big screen above with the full menu. They hand you a ticket, and you proceed to the cashier (once again, a cheerful, happy person) for payment. You then slide to the pickup window for your order.

The brisket sandwich was in front of me. Three sauce choices on my table–Sweet Baby Rays, another something something, and the House Sauce. Sauce applied, bite taken.

In Korea (south, not north; the north is a prison) I traveled to Wonju every six months to get BBQ. I lived in Daejeon, and that was a two-hour drive. Worth it. Other people have cannon balled into the American BBQ market and not distinguished themselves at all. Only @sweetoakbbq. Granted, Gus is a trained chef and shipped a 1200-pound smoker from Texas after he learned from the best in America.

“That’s all going to change; I’m going to be in the States and then back in the south.”

Silly naïve boy I am.

Random place in Maryland: FAIL. Black Hog in Maryland: FAIL. Mission BBQ: FAIL and why do people go there? Dem Bros and a Grill in West Virginia: That food was your mama slapped your face good. Redwood: Good effort, terrific sides. I can’t remember the name of the place I left review for in the countryside– I’d go back if I was near, so that’s an okay. Great sauce there, too.

I then I had a bite of the brisket sandwich. Choirs of angels, muted trumpets, all of it. Nice brisket, with a decent touch of fat. Smoke flavor comes through with stuffing a briquette up your nose. House Sauce for the WIN. The people who use Sweet Baby Ray’s there, KNOW WE ARE JUDGING YOU.

I can’t wait to go back when I want more than a snack.

You are doing God’s work.
Thanks for the sandwich.

I CAME IN FROM OUT OF TOWN AND ORDERED HOG PLATTER AND THIS IS ALL I GOT! FOUR HUSH PUPPIES AND TWO SIDES AND SOME PULL PORK, I THOUGHT IF IT WAS HOG PLATTER IT WOULD HAVE CAME WITH MORE THAN ONE MEAT AND I SHOULD HAVE CHECK IT BEFORE I WALKED OUT! MY FAULT!!! LIKE OTHER FAST FOOD PLACES JUST PUT ANYTHING IN THERE OR ONE MEAT AND I ASKED IF EVERYTHING WAS READY.

Food wasn’t great at all neither were the two young goofy dudes behind the counter, $18 dollars and they were so pressed and concerned about asking me for receipts to make sure I paid for this bland food and burnt hush puppies ‍♂️ they didn’t give me the drink that came with this again,$18 meal they had to put me thru 3 security protocols to make sure it was paid ……then turned around and kept the receipt for bbq purchase and items I bought from gas station. I only came because of a picture of the brisket I seen in a previous review that was also negative, but I thought so what the brisket looks really good and mines didn’t look like brisket I believe it was straight up pulled pork i paid $18 for that’s why I took pic. I’m exhausted ,I moved to red mill but still have to eat out in Norfolk or Chesapeake ‍

Don’t waste your money. The is probably the worst bbq I have EVER had. The baked beans are just can porkin beans with a little blan meat in it. The Mac and cheese has no seasoning. And I do not know who idea it was to rub the ribs with a quart of mustard and a teaspoon of bbq sauce, but it was a terrible. I am not sure how long they have been in business, but their time will be up soon if they dont change their recipe. Again don’t waste your money on this blan food. Almost $30 wasted. Oh and the hush puppies taste like they were cooked in grease from last week.

In town trying local spots and came across this BBQ spot, I was not impressed. I eat a lot of BBQ something was just missing. I got the rib platter, sides fries and baked beans and a brisket sandwich with green beans. My girl did enjoy her brisket and green beans. My rib was mostly tender but was lacking flavor it came slathered in BBQ sauce, me personally I like tasting mine without sauce and then adding if needed. Now I would try them again just to make sure it wasn’t a bad day on the smoker.

The Malbons are pretty large family in this area from what I understand. I’ve heard of Malbons around town since I was a teenager, I love barbecue and I really like their sauces that they make their as well. It’s sort of cross town for me but well worth it. i’ve been going there for years , both of my parents love it and I take them there often. I do know one thing for sure over all the years they’ve always had great staff they’ve always had good food and they’re a part of Virginia Beach, I would highly recommend checking them out if you’re visiting the area or if you lived here and you haven’t been there

They provided catering for the apartment I live at. Everything was good! Meat was very tender and flavorful and the sides were really good. Both the coleslaw and the mac & cheese was SUPER good. Their house BBQ sauce was also delicious. I would definitely go there and try them myself.

We ordered $80 of food from Malbon’s today. This included a la carte pulled bbq on a scale of 1 – 10 it was at best a 5 if you like sweet. One Lb of each, collards, baked beans (pork n beans) and green beans all of then taste like they were straight out of a can. Scale -0. Philly chz steak at best 5. Hush puppies 2 orders burnt! Also bacon cheese burger w/fries both over cooked no seasoning. Needless to say never will I ever be going back. Spend your money somewhere else. Beach Bully or whitener’s.

Yep, the reviews don’t lie. Great BBQ and hush puppies at a reasonable price. Is it in a gas station? Yes. Is it the best BBQ I’ve had in months? Absolutely.
