The wife was like 45 minutes
The pastrami was good. It wasn’t enough meat on it. I will send you the picture. I asked for cheese. It wasn’t cheese on it. The fries are not freshly cooked. The Kool-Aid taste like flavored water. Don’t recommend at all. Here’s my pictures.
I came to Soul Food Shack with my expectations set squarely on the food. I was only in Cali for a short while, and this spot happened to be about 15 min down the street from where I was staying. Perfect location, and I was curious to see how Cali does soul food.
From the first bite, it hit me
Emotionally triggered as I was transported straight back to my childhood. It felt like I was sitting at the kitchen table in New Orleans, eating my nanny’s candied yams, greens, macaroni, and fried chicken. The flavors had that deep, home-cooked love, that is not taken for granted or lost on me, so hats off to the cook!
That kind of food doesn’t just fill you up; it connects you,and to top it off, the drinks? Man, they serve that real deal kol-aid. The kind I used to drink as a kid.
As I was eating, I started thinking about how food ties us to previous & future generations. It’s wild how dishes once considered scraps i.e: greens, yams, cornbread, oxtails, are now sought out in restaurants just like this one. These meals are more than just food; they’re stories of survival, resilience, and community. But I digress, I know y’all didn’t come here for a history lesson in Black culture, so I’ll leave it at that.
Now, onto the standouts. The mac and cheese and yams? Easily the stars of the plate. I like my yams runny and solid, because I love mixing it with the cornbread. Sweet, savory, soft–that combo hits every time. The macaroni? Seasoned perfectly. Creamy, rich, and not bland like you sometimes get at other spots .
That’s rare, and I don’t take it for granted.
Overall, Soul Food Shack gave me more than just a good meal, it gave me a taste of home, miles away from where I grew up. If you’re ever in Inglewood and need some food that feeds more than just your stomach, pull up, tap in, eat up.
Pro-tip: Make sure you taste the red velvet waffles before pouring any syrup on them because they are pure perfection!
Fried chicken wings were dry and underseasoned.
Catfish filet was underseasoned and uneventful.
Potato salad tasted store bought but doctored up.
Mac and cheese is pasty.
Fries were soggy.
